Keep Stanwell Street safe

There was not a functioning Primary School in this site when approval was granted (for the previously planned residential home and for the housing development that is currently being built) with access through Stanwell St. This has changed, and there is now a busy one, with the peculiarity that a greater proportion of the children travel there by car, because the catchment area is the whole of Edinburgh. Granting approval to a second housing development with access through Stanwell St. would mean an impossible traffic pressure on this street. It would also make traffic worse on the stretch of Bonnington Road immediately adjacent to the school (where it is already very intense), increasing greatly the hazard to the many school and nursery children and their siblings, (some of them very young) walking in and out of the school gates.

Allowing Stanwell Street to be used as a vehiclular access is an accident waiting to happen. It will considerably increase the volume of traffic. this is particularly worrying as it is closest to the entrance to the nursery as well as the pedestrian access to the park, which again has many young visitors, This group of young people are least traffic aware and can suddenly be unpredictable in their actions, It would make much more sense for the entrance to be at Stanwell Street instead.

The traffic on Bonnington Road is already a huge concern with regards to the safety of children at Taobh na Pairce. The council have previously been made aware of this. An increase in traffic due to access to the development through Stanwell Street will absolutely increase this risk. I also cannot understand why this change in access would be considered when the council have just implemented a traffic ban outside other primary schools in Edinburgh as part of a safety initiative.

I think allowing Stanwell St to be the main access route to the new housing estate has serious safety issues for people using the Primary school. There is already an extremely busy road outside. Increasing safety risk, pollution and noise is not acceptable and the plans for the access road should be changed to Tennant St.

I think there are major safety issues in allowing Stanwell St to be the access route for the new estate at Silverfields. The Gaelic school already has one extremely busy road on one side of it. Increasing traffic noise, pollution and safety risk would be unacceptable. The route should absolutely be via Tennant St.

Children, parent and pedestrian safety is a priority. I am concerned that an increase in traffic to an already congested area will jeopardise this. Please can a safer entrance be created from Tennant St, not Stanwell St. (I understand Tennant St was historically the original entrance to the proposed site).

Bonnington Road and Stanwell Street cannot safely sustain an increase of traffic. An entrance to the development from Stanwell Street will create a significant and unnecessary risk to young children and other pedestrians in the area. Please ensure that this does not happen, when a safer alternative is available via Tennant Street.

On original planning it was not shown that road would pass by the new school. This should be reviewed.

The proposed access in Stanwell Street will have a detrimental effect on child safety at Bun Sgoil Taobh na Pairce. Families with very young children accessing the school for playgroup, nursery and school are very concerned and so vehicular access should be via Tennant Street only.

Due to the significant deviation from the original planning application and clear risk to school and nursery children of the proposed route- planning for the access route via Stanwell St is unviable/ a hazard and irresponsible. Routing through the original route of Tennant St would appear to be a simple solution.

I hope that the planning committee can ensure that cars are directed to Tennant St and Stanwell St can be pedestrian/cycle access only, to ensure a safe environment for infants and nursery children.

We, and the other parents to whom we have spoken at the school are very concerned about the proposal to use the current cul de sac of Stanwell St as the main road access to this housing estate. This is where the gate for the nursery and infant pupils is placed, so there are lots of 3 to 7 year olds milling around here several times a day during the various pick up and drop off times. This is clearly a significant safety hazard with the inevitable increase in motorised traffic which will occur. The existing road access to the development site is from Tennant St, and logic would dictate that this should continue to be the case.

Traffic is already too fast on boning ton road and there no school sign or speed bump in place to protect the children. An increase of traffic in Stanwell Street will only worsen the situation.

Hi - Edinburgh Council has just banned cars at drop off and pick up time at 6 edinburgh primaries. I don't understand how a new housing scheme access road could be given consent given the council's own position on traffic near schools. Please ensure the developer uses the existing access at Tennant Street. Many thanks Barbie Lyon

As the entrance at Tennant Street would provide safe and easy access to the development, there is no need to endanger the children of Taobh na Pairce by having an entrance at Stanwell Street. Let common sense reign.

The safety of the children, parents and staff attending the school are the only concern.

The relatively high volume of traffic which would result in access to the new development from Stanwell Street instead of Tennant Street as originally planned could well result in children being injured or killed by cars. Please do not allow this to happen.
