It is extremely difficult to find a quality education for elementary and middle school here. Bringing in an external high school that is not serving this neighborhood directly is not the direction that we need to go to strengthen our system.

Smedley should reopen as either a neighborhood elementary school or an ECE center--that is where our options in the neighborhood are really thin!

The program at Smedley, is one of a kind that should never be dismissed. Great staff and faculty, not to mention the atmosphere it creates along the area where the school is at. Very welcoming and encourages teaching and learning. KEEP SMEDLEY!

We choiced into 4 schools last year, and did not get in to any. Unfortunately, we will have to leave this wonderful neighborhood unless we have a good option for our ece-4.

Re-opening Smedley as an elementary school for the growing Sunnyside community makes perfect sense.

The SUNI Ed committee has laid out a compelling argument. We are a Sunnyside family who choiced into Valdez 7 years ago when it wasn't hard to secure a spot, and my younger kids have always had a spot due to sibling preference. I've always felt lucky like that, but we shouldn't have to rely on "school choice luck of the draw." Currently, Sunnyside has particularly thin options. I'm grateful that we live within the Skinner boundary of Sunnyside, too. It makes no sense to me that most of Sunnyside has an ECE-8 school (Trevista) as our "middle school". That, to me is unappealing because middle school should be a fresh start. (ie I wouldn't send my kids to a 6th grade where half of the kids already had established friendships, etc, while my kid were the newcomer). The proposal to return Horace Mann to its original purpose as a middle school makes much more sense. Give Sunnyside a stand alone middle school and reopen Smedley as a grade school!
Valdez has been housed at Smedley this fall, and I absolutely love the building and its close proximity to my house. Our neighborhood deserves this building, operating as it was intended to do -- as an elementary school for the neighborhood, not a high school.

The neighborhood is changing with many young families who really don't have many options for good schools in the area. We need another elementary school! Go to any event around the area, and you will be able to see why this is important.

This neighborhood is burgeoning with families with preschool and elementary age children, and we need a quality elementary school for these children. Smedley is not equipped for high school, but it is a perfect elementary school.

We would like to have a second language school for middle and high school students. Students coming from Sandoval and Valdez Elementary.

Smedley is not a compatible location for a high school. The building is designed for young children, there is no parking, and there are no labs or athletic fields. We need a good elementary school, not a high school whose students don't live in our area.

DPS should plan to accommodate young families in our community by maintaining access to neighborhood schools for our soon-to-be school-aged children.

Please reopen Smedley as a neighborhood elementary. We would love to see Trevista ECE-5 moved back into Smedley out of Horace Mann to have the children back in a proper elementary building. Smedley is much more centrally located to the district than Horace Mann allowing more students to walk.
