KEEP OUR MAGNUM
We, the undersigned, wish to declare our support for the retention and improvement of the Magnum Leisure Centre in Irvine, Scotland. We oppose its proposed demolition and replacement by a new, less ambitious facility in the Town Centre. This proposed development would reduce visitor numbers to the town and reduce the level of recreational facilities available to Irvinites. It would compromise the setting of our historic Townhouse, adversely impact on traffic congestion and pedestrian safety and have a negative effect on the retail area. Such a reduction in the scope of leisure facilities in the town shows a lack of ambition. We have the opportunity to refurbish the existing building and create a resource which could, once again, be of regional importance. The argument against demolition is unanswerable: it is bad for Irvine's economy; bad for Irvine's heritage, bad for the health and morale of Irvinites; and takes us in the wrong direction as as a town and as a community.
