Please join in signing this petition to let the Board of Trustees for the CH Booth Library in Newtown, CT, know that DEI is essential!
The dissolution of the DEI Committee would send a terrible message to our vibrant and diverse community. From hate crimes to book bans, Newtown needs DEI more than ever. Please keep the DEI Committee!
The Board of Trustees thinks they can quietly dismantle our DEI committee and hope we stop paying attention. They are dead wrong because your stories show exactly why this work is non-negotiable for Newtown.

We cannot continue to fall for the uneducated and ignorant opinions of some that the phrase "diversity equity and inclusion" is a detractor from anything. Our population IS diverse and the community deserves a library that reflects that.

It would be very disappointing to know that the library disbands their DEI committee. As a Latina in town it has always felt that the library has been inclusive and DEI is not something that happens organically. It is something that you strive for, with intention.

DEI is still crucial in Newtown. There is so much work still to be done to ensure DEI and a diverse population are supported, encouraged and represented in Newtown.

The library is the heart of our town. As much as we wish to believe that it’s “nicer” in Newtown, marginalized residents, including children, are routinely the targets of hate by fellow Newtowners. I implore you NOT to desolve the DEI committee at CHB. Prioritizing DEI not only sends a message of support to marginalized residents; it sends a strong message to the racists, homophobes, transphobes, antisemites, etc… who live among us.

The Library Board of Directors’ support of DEI and of the staff in its programming selection is critical at this time. Please do not disband this committee. It would be a huge disservice to our town.
