Petition to Keep Chromebooks at School
Concern:
Parents at Carson Elementary are concerned about the amount of time young students spend on non-school activities when using their Chromebooks at home. While parents try to monitor usage, current parental controls are limited, making it difficult to keep students focused on their task. By keeping the devices at the school, we can ensure that they are used exclusively for educational purposes and don’t contribute to excessive screen time.
Why This Matters:
- A survey of 170 Carson parents found that 53% of students use Chromebooks for non-educational purposes, including social media and non-school websites.
- Carson is one of the only elementary schools in the district that sends Chromebooks home.
- Improved filtering softwares are being rolled out, but many families will still struggle with setting appropriate boundaries for both content and screen time
Proposed Solution:
- Default to a policy of student Chromebooks staying at school
- Families may make individual arrangements to bring them home should they so choose
- Utilize charging stations—other schools have done this successfully, and the Carson PTA has set aside funds to help with the purchase of storage solutions
- Improve content management and teach digital citizenship lessons
Request to School Leadership:
We ask that Carson Elementary align with the majority of the district and keep Chromebooks at school. This change will support better learning, reduce distractions, and ensure technology is used responsibly. DPS's recently passed bond initiative also specifically dedicates funds to Carson for classroom charging carts.
Children only have a short time to be young and Carson can continue to help support their well-rounded character offline, as well.

The administration has acknowledged the volume of community feedback and agreed to review our proposed storage solutions. I am currently drafting a formal letter to the school board to request a hearing on the device policy.

Unless they are specifically using them for a homework assignment, we would like the laptops to stay at school. My daughter does not need more screen time, and I imagine the wear and tear on these laptops would be greatly reduced.
Whole heartedly agree. Boys get home and immediately hop on for games or other sites that is not educational. We hate having this constant battle with getting off laptop. We have to hide on the weekends
I ask for my daughter's computer each afternoon when we get home from school. If I forget, she uses the computer in ways that are not good for emotional health and well being. The Chromebook does not serve an educational purpose at home, and if she does need it for that, then we can give her access to her google classroom from our family computer in a monitored way. The computer at home is more harmful than helpful.
I do not think the school and district should be giving my elementary-aged students full access to the internet with no guardrails, as we do not allow that at home. Leaving the computers at school would help to manage and limit their access to instructional needs and not YouTube while sitting in the cafeteria during breakfast time or Discovery Link. Not to mention the daily weight of these computers is a lot to lug around for a petite 6-7yr old child.
Considering we are in a non-homework school district, and considering all the studies on heavy backpacks on small children, it is ridiculous that the Chromebook have to come home every night.
Taking the laptop to and from school is not necessary.
I support the idea of keeping Chromebooks at school rather than requiring students to take them home daily. While I understand that some students may not have alternative devices for research or schoolwork, the current policy places significant responsibility on children and their families. When students bring the devices home, they are more susceptible to accidental damage, loss, or being forgotten, which can disrupt learning. Additionally, repair costs are often passed on to parents, which can create financial strain—especially for families who may already struggle to afford technology. A more equitable solution would be to keep Chromebooks at school, ensuring they remain in good condition and available for all students during the school day. For students who genuinely need to take a device home, the school should have a process in place to provide one, with the school covering any repair or replacement costs if damage occurs. This would help ensure that access to technology is not a burden on families while also maintaining accountability and care for school property. By implementing this approach, we can better support students’ education while being mindful of the challenges that come with sending devices home.

My son has learned to access youtube on school chromebook. I powerwash his computer several times a week trying to clear it from his history so he cannot access links easily. We do not allow youtube on his personal device, because of how much content is there that we cannot monitor.
