Kadena High School has selected several books from the DODEA Scope and Sequence that are sexually explicit in detailing rape, domestic violence, and brutal and hate-driven violence. These pieces of literature are desensitizing and normalize child marriage, child soldiering, and racial violence. As parents and students, we request that the material to be covered is discussed with both students and parents before required reading is distributed. Additionally, we request that any student who wishes to not be forced to read such material be provided an alternative book to read without suffering any penalty.

Updates

The school administration remains completely silent while they force these disturbing materials onto our children. We will keep fighting to ensure every family has the right to opt out of this graphic content without fear of retaliation.

I was very upset to find out the nature of a book that my daughter had just read and completed a report for. I only found out the context when she asked me to read her report over to turn it in. As a parent of a minor, I was completely shocked and angry that I was never given a warning of such sensitive, and traumatic subject matter and events from not only this book but apparently a few others that I was not aware of. It has broken my trust in the education system. How is it that we are given warnings/ratings from television shows but not from our own schools? Are we to turn a blind eye because of education and literature’s sake? It has taken away HOW I, the parent, choose to teach my children about these matters.

In a time where choices, diversity, and autonomy are so highly valued, teachers, students and parents should have a voice in what is being taught in school. There should be viable options that don’t force a student to have to withdraw from a class. I am adding my voice requesting alternate options within a learning environment, based on moral reasoning.

My son took 10th grade honors last year. I was unhappy with "A Thousand Splendid Suns" on the curriculum. I have two more children coming to Kadena High School soon and I'd like to see this book removed from the curriculum. I'd also like "A Long Way Gone" removed, which I've heard is on the Honors curriculum. I know it is inappropriate for any age, let alone kids in their mid-teens.

Make sure students and parents are informed of their right to read from an alternative selection.

I believe that everyone needs to be informed of the material of study before hand so express of concerns from anyone may be made. It would be fair in doing so.

To require Honors English students to read this FILTH without input from parents is WRONG.
