Kadena High School has selected several books from the DODEA Scope and Sequence that are sexually explicit in detailing rape, domestic violence, and brutal and hate-driven violence. These pieces of literature are desensitizing and normalize child marriage, child soldiering, and racial violence. As parents and students, we request that the material to be covered is discussed with both students and parents before required reading is distributed. Additionally, we request that any student who wishes to not be forced to read such material be provided an alternative book to read without suffering any penalty.
I was very upset to find out the nature of a book that my daughter had just read and completed a report for. I only found out the context when she asked me to read her report over to turn it in. As a parent of a minor, I was completely shocked and angry that I was never given a warning of such sensitive, and traumatic subject matter and events from not only this book but apparently a few others that I was not aware of. It has broken my trust in the education system. How is it that we are given warnings/ratings from television shows but not from our own schools? Are we to turn a blind eye because of education and literature’s sake? It has taken away HOW I, the parent, choose to teach my children about these matters.
