I was very upset to find out the nature of a book that my daughter had just read and completed a report for. I only found out the context when she asked me to read her report over to turn it in. As a parent of a minor, I was completely shocked and angry that I was never given a warning of such sensitive, and traumatic subject matter and events from not only this book but apparently a few others that I was not aware of. It has broken my trust in the education system. How is it that we are given warnings/ratings from television shows but not from our own schools? Are we to turn a blind eye because of education and literature’s sake? It has taken away HOW I, the parent, choose to teach my children about these matters.

I believe that everyone needs to be informed of the material of study before hand so express of concerns from anyone may be made. It would be fair in doing so.

To require Honors English students to read this FILTH without input from parents is WRONG.

In a time where choices, diversity, and autonomy are so highly valued, teachers, students and parents should have a voice in what is being taught in school.
There should be viable options that don’t force a student to have to withdraw from a class.
I am adding my voice requesting alternate options within a learning environment, based on moral reasoning.

Please provide alternative reading. Students can learn literary tools and styles without reading such violent and sexually explicit books. Thank you.

It's so important for parents to have a say in their child's education. Please allow parents and students to opt out of material that they feel is not age appropriate.

My son took 10th grade honors last year. I was unhappy with "A Thousand Splendid Suns" on the curriculum. I have two more children coming to Kadena High School soon and I'd like to see this book removed from the curriculum. I'd also like "A Long Way Gone" removed, which I've heard is on the Honors curriculum. I know it is inappropriate for any age, let alone kids in their mid-teens.

There needs to be more alternative choices. What works for some, may not work for others, and there should be options available.

I agree that if there is an alternative selection per the Dodea syllabus, then that alternative book should be allowed in all English Literature classes in Dodea. There should be a viable choice in what one reads for a grade. No one's grade should suffer for choosing one book or another within the curriculum.
