I am Sotu Godbless Oghenevwede, a student of the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria,and I am writing with respect to the alleged gruesome murder carried out by the Nigerian Police Force on Edah Oghenekevwe Richard a graduating student of Mechanical Engineering of the aforementioned tertiary institution. This sad event occurred on 20th December, 2015, his birthday and same day he set aside to thank God for a successful project defense having concluded his final exams and was supposed to serve next year in "Batch A" of the NYSC, his death occurred on that same day at 07:30pm and until his death he was a photographer who managed to fit his bill through college.

Report from various sources had it that he was on his way back from Church and standing along Assemblies of God Church junction in Alakahia, PH, when he was allegedly hit by the Nigerian Police Van with registration number NPF 1791D driven by Inspector John Kanu.

According to an unnamed source, eyewitness immediately swung into action after the accident. "The police van after hitting the boy, tried to drive off but were stopped by onlookers at the junction and eyewitnesses who demanded that the victim be taken to the hospital.

The police agreed and took him to the University of Portharcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), but on reaching there, they allegedly told the attending nurses that they just picked him while they were driving along NNPC Filling station at Rumuosi and they weren't aware of what had happened to him." "It was one of the nurses in the hospital that took down the details of one of the policemen involved. When called by the family members of the boy, the policeman denied it in it's entirety. The police up till now are still denying the incident despite the several onlookers and eyewitnesses that were at the scene of the accident." he added

This would have been a case of road accident but for the fact that the Nigerian police Van was driven recklessly on the wrong one way lane makes it a cold blooded murder.

A lot of concerned student just like me are angry over this incidence and all we demand is justice for it is believe among us that "Injury to one is injury to all". This is not the first time this has happened, although not by the police but also by undisciplined motorist who don't drive carefully and obey traffic rules. A similar case occurred to a second year student of the University of Port Harcourt, Uchechukwu Ordu who was killed on the 4th of August, 2014 by a hit and run driver at Nkpolu Junction (same east-west road) in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. The student, who was on his way to the university was knocked down by a taxi driver, who fled immediately after the incident occurred, an eyewitness said. The eye witness, who spoke under the cloak of anonymity in Port Harcourt said the deceased had nobody to rescue him, so he died.

I and the entire student of the University of Port Harcourt who detest injustice hereby make the following prayers;

1) I would like that you, by virtue of your office as the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State, carryout thorough investigation on this matter and bring to book, any Police official and all those involved in the gruesome murder of this innocent young student.

2) I want a memorial at the location where Edah Oghenerukevwe Richard's life ended to signify that the life of every Nigerain student is sacrosanct

3) That appropriate measures be put in place to upgrade traffic facilities along the the East-West road (Choba-Alakahia Communities) to avoid future occurrence of any similar case

4) That the Parents/Guardian be contacted and given a proper condolence treatment

5) And that Justice prevail in all facets on this matter.

All well meaning Nigerians, should stand up and embrace the fact that it could be anyone and hence, the need to support this call for justice. As Martin Luther Kings Jnr rightly said "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere", I therefore demand JUSTICE for Edah Oghenerukevwe Richard. JUSTICE for his Parents. JUSTICE for the entire Nigerian Student and JUSTICE for a free society.
