I’m gathering signatures and raising awareness in support of backyard chickens in Prairie City. I’m asking the city to allow 8 hens, no roosters and a completely enclosed chicken run and coop (so no free ranging chickens!) Will you add your support by signing this petition saying either "Yes, I support backyard chickens" or "I don't care if others have chickens"
To offer some bullet points of information...
** I am not doing this to "save money" on eggs because the cost is about the same and sometimes, maybe even a bit higher, depending on the price of feed. But I can micromanage the nutrition going into my children.
** Fresh eggs taste WAY better than commercially produced store bought eggs! If you've never tasted the difference, DO IT!!
** Chickens can be just as amusing to watch and interact with, as much as your cat or dog. they are hilarious and add so much joy to your life. If you've never experienced chickens galloping across the yard to get whatever treat you are offering, you are missing one of the most hilarious experiences ever!
** In the absence of a rooster (I don't want a rooster in my backyard waking me up either!) chickens are actually VERY quiet creatures. Some of them squawk loudly when they lay eggs but even this noise is MUCH quieter than even a small dog barking and definitely quieter than any of the 5 large dogs that live near me. And do not misunderstand that statement, I don't have a problem with the 5 large dogs near me, but it is such a silly statement to say that chickens are noisy when compared to a mastiff, german shepherd and hunting dog all around me yapping at the same time.
** Just like any other pet, chickens teach children responsibility as they learn to care for another creature. Giving them the opportunity for immediate gratification after collecting eggs in the morning and then sitting down to a breakfast that they helped to put on the table!
My neighbor has them and they dont make any noise at all. way quieter than the dogs next door.
