Amnesty International is a worldwide not for profit organisation with the aim to support human rights around the world and within our community. It is a growing organisation and there are already 7 million people involved, from over 150 countries.

We are living in a challenging time for human rights. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people are killed during conflicts and crises, while millions more are left in need of our protection and support. The John Curtin group can play its vital role in helping create a world where our most basic human rights are enjoyed by all!

Our Amnesty International WA Schools Group will be supported, given guidance, resources, guest speakers and fundraising opportunities by the Amnesty schools team. We aim to start human rights discussions, campaigns and actions and to create a strong and functional group. An example of this is Shenton College which has a fantastic student administrated group which has achieved great outcomes! The group will promote student directed actions and an ongoing commitment to human right activism.

We strongly believe human rights education in schools is critical to building empowered societies who know and can realise their rights. The group will be providing opportunities to create cross school networks, and further our activism.

This is something that John Curtin and the wider community desperately needs! We are passionate about this and I am determined to start up the group!

Updates

October 24, 2016

I am currently meeting with the school administration to outline how a formal Amnesty group will function on campus. Post this link on your personal social media feeds right now to show that our student body demands a seat at the table. Email your local representatives today to ask them why human rights education programs are not already a standard part of our curriculum.

October 24, 2016

The momentum behind starting this Amnesty group is real and it shows how many students are ready to prioritize human rights at John Curtin. Post this link on your Facebook and text three friends to keep this pressure on the administration. Email your representatives today to insist that we get the resources and guidance we need to launch.

JC is a school with a student base that would benefit strongly from this group. Sad I'm leaving the school before I could see it to fruition
