Thanks for supporting the establishment of a human rights group at UMDNJ-SOM!

PHR is US-based independent organization that uses medicine and science to stop mass atrocities and severe human rights violations against individuals. The goal of our PHR Chapter is to create an outlet for students to pursue their passion for health and human rights while at SOM.

A statement from the Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) National Student Program on the goals and benefits of becoming a student advocate for human rights through PHR:
The goal of the PHR National Student Program is to advance health professional students’ understanding and lifelong commitment to human rights activism, and to cultivate their unique contributions as advocates for human rights locally, nationally and globally. The PHR National Student Program supports PHR’s mission by offering students the chance to contribute meaningfully to PHR’s work and by developing the next generation of human rights activists.

Goals in the pipeline for PHR @ UMDNJ-SOM:
*Establishing opportunities for volunteer work and shadowing at UMDNJ's CARES Institute
*Creating partnerships with local NGOs addressing issues of homelessness, poverty, domestic violence, and human trafficking
*Hosting lectures and screening documentaries on the topic of human rights and health
*Connecting UMDNJ-SOM students to the resources of the PHR National Student Program and the broader medical human rights community

If any of this sounds good to you, please sign this petition to show your support!

Thanks! Your help is greatly appreciated!

Updates

November 30, 2012

I have spent this week meeting with campus administrators to outline our vision for how this chapter will directly benefit our students and the surrounding community. It is heartening to see how many of you share this need to connect our medical education with real advocacy for those suffering from systemic neglect.

November 30, 2012

Seeing this level of support confirms that so many of my fellow students are ready to prioritize human rights in our medical training. This momentum proves we are building a necessary home for advocacy here at SOM. I am already in talks with the administration about our next steps.

This is exactly what medical students need. Glad to see some action being taken at SOM to address these critical issues.
