To Hancock students, parents, and community:

On Monday, June 22, 2020, our community lost a beacon. Coach Jeff Spielman began his teaching career in 1970 as our elementary P.E. teacher. By the time he retired in 2012, he had left a path that countless students and athletes had followed. Coach Spielman's desire for his students to always give their best guided his teaching, whether in his classroom, on a track, a football field, or a basketball court. During his notable coaching career, he accrued the records for the best record for a season (at 21 wins), the most wins (at over 250), the most playoff victories, and the most titles. Coach Spielman's distinguished accomplishments culminated with an induction to the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. Coach Spielman was a mentor to many over the years, and we remember him for his compassion, motivation, and dedication.

To honor the legacy of Coach Jeff Spielman, we ask that you support our petition to Washington County Public School to rename the Hancock Middle-Senior High School basketball gymnasium, the Jeff Spielman Memorial Gymnasium.

Jeff was one of the most honoable men that I have known. A fair, compassionate, hard working, Coach from the old school program of teaching, helping, motivating and molding young athletes into silid citizens. I think this is not just a choice but rather a must do. Please consider naming the gym in memory of Jeffrey Spielman.

I believe 100% that the Gym should be named after & dedicated to this man. He was always so kind & helpful. He was the true meaning of what a Teacher should be!! Future Physical Education teachers will have BIG shoes to fill, but when they walk in there every day and see his name & remember the man he was, they will do better!

Jeff is the most influential coach to ever grace the gymnasium at HMSHS. His life lessons stem far beyond those sidelines. This is the least the community could do to honor someone so special to so many.

Jeff was one of the kindest souls I have ever known. He not only coached his students, but he CARED about and for them. He took care of them, in and out of class, in and out of the athletic venue. This would be an awesome tribute to an awesome man - a true gentleman and legend.

Me Spielman was the coach of my sons 1999 winning basketball team. His mentoring has helped develop my son and many other students during their education. Coach’s friendship has also spanned the decades following. Let’s do this honor where honor is surely do!!!!!
