We, the students of Jensen Beach High School, petition the administration to allow the student body to decorate their graduation caps in the weeks preluding to graduation in the month of may.
The Class of 2016 looks to be the first to start the tradition of decorating the top of their graduation caps according to personal values or the college that they are enrolling. Graduating High School is an event that needs to be celebrated with enthusiasm, spirit, and a positive perspective for the future. It is the last opportunity to display Falcon Pride; it is an event that only comes once in a lifetime. Jensen Beach can maintain the proper image of honor and class, yet still display school spirit through the decoration of graduation caps.
As the student body, we would like to maintain the pristine, professional look of our school and will not abuse this power. As the student body we vow not to violate our school’s image. In order to prevent this violation of inappropriate images displayed on the top of the cap, a student council made of the Class of 2016 Officers will be in charge of monitoring and approving of the portrayal of spirit. The Class of 2016 Officers will have full responsibility of maintaining the professional look of Jensen Beach high School while still encouraging school spirit.
If the decoration of graduation caps is condoned and approved, responsibility will fall on the Senior Class Officers for future years.
We request that the Jensen Beach High School administration fully condone the student activity of the decoration of one’s graduation cap.

I am truly overwhelmed by how many of you have stepped up to share your thoughts on this tradition. Your enthusiasm has really turned this into a conversation that the administration simply cannot ignore anymore.

All other schools are able to do it. It shows diversity and creativity, graduation is a time for students to shine, plus it makes it easier for parents to spot their child
I could write an analytical essay on how the "classlessness" argument that is presented is completely defunct and takes away from our human right to self-expression especially at a festivity as unique as high school graduation.
You only are young once. They are not showing disrespect. I've have lived in this county 36 years, I have 3 graduates from South Fork, they were allowed to decorate and throw their hats, too! Go Jensen Seniors!
As an educator I feel this is a tremendous milestone in the lives of these seniors. They should have the opportunity to show their school pride (Jensen Beach) or future college by decorating their caps! Give these young adults a little freedom and let go of some of the control!
I have been wanting to do this since freshman year, when I found out we weren't allowed to decorate our grad caps. I believe that if we got accepted into a college that we've been dreaming of going too we should be able to display it on our caps...not to mention Martin county and south fork are allowed to.
If we are the ones graduating, we want to celebrate our way. We are moving on to be adults and we should have the freedom to decorate our caps.

I brought my decorated cap to college with me and hung it on my wall. My friends are always telling me how awesome it was that my high school let us do that and that they wish they could've done it as well. Graduation is a great experience and getting to represent the college you're planning on attending by decorating your cap just makes it that much better!
