This petition is to help people with Irlens Syndrome get funding for any help they need to just simply get by in life. Irlens Syndrome affects the lives of 12-15% of the population. However it is easily controlled through assessment and coloured filters for both adults and children. I am a 22 year old student, I have the need to wear colour filters, however I can get no funding or financial help from the NHS. I have recently had a re-test to get the colours of my filters changed as this can often happen with sufferers. The test alone cost me £75 and then on top of that I have to pay £125 for the lenses and then the frames of my choice. Having recognised this condition since the age of 16, I am constantly disgusted that I can get no help at all. Without the glasses I really can't read for long periods of time, I often suffer with severe headaches due to this. From personal experience, I have found that when I'm reading, it tends to be on bright white paper that has a lot of writing on it, I have trouble focusing on it as the paper is just too bright for me and my brain and eyes have to work that bit harder to focus, hence the headaches. When I took the eye test, my normal reading speed of words per minute was significantly increased when the lenses were applied by 10%. At the end of the day, this is a medically recognised condition and there is no help for it sufferers. And my petition here is to change that for the future.
