Today at 9 A.M. a student was struck by lightning. She was transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. This death may have been prevented if the path she was walking on had a nearby lightning rod. In order to enhance the safety of all those who attend the University of Waterloo, I believe we should have lightning rods installed all around campus. Even if the cost may seem expensive, no one can put a price on a human life. Please, sign this petition so that this belief may become a reality.
Why not just put up a weather alert system for students instead? seems way more helpful than trying to lightning proof the whole campus.

I was walking near there this morning and it was terrifying. Anything that helps keep people safer on campus is worth talking about at least.

This is a total freak accident and my heart goes out to the girl and her family. but honestly putting up metal rods everywhere sounds like a massive waste of money that wont do anything.

A more practical approach might be to install more light posts by sidewalks. These would not only act as lightning rods but help us see better at night which has other safety benefits as well.

I have nothing but compassion for the family and friends, and the victim of this tragic and freak accident. But if your goal is to improve the safety of those who attend the University of Waterloo, this is silly. This year alone, 2 UW students have been killed in traffic accidents. Every year over 2000 Canadians are killed in traffic related accidents. If you want to improve safety, petition for safer roads.
