I ask that there be regular or weekly class Zoom meetings held for each Lab section by each lab instructor focused on going over some of the material for that week. Personally, it is extremely difficult to consume the material and then apply it to work that is assigned when all of it is essentially self-taught. Because of the devastating effects of COVID, we as students are not able to be in a physical lab class and be instructed for the 3 hours a week that is listed on the pre-COVID syllabus and on MyUNLV.

Without live online meetings, I believe students in these lab sections are unfortunately subject to missing key information or tools needed to sufficiently digest the course load associated with Physics 151. This predicament is unprecedented by any former enrollees of this course. Therefore, why must we be the only class of students who will not receive live instruction, nor supplemental online instruction from the instructors we have paid this university to provide. I empathize that this COVID era is challenging for faculty as well. However, I don’t believe that emails will suffice.

Please sign this petition if you agree with the above statement and would like to have live WebEx or Zoom meetings held by our lab instructors at the regularly scheduled time of your lab.

This hybrid model is excessively confusing. Many of us do not know what we are to do each week and it feels more difficult to get help. On top of that, because we are doing a hybrid model the lab does not align properly with the class. Everything has been self taught, and it's unfair. We would be better off watching instructors do experiments over video chat. Or, better yet, do what the biology department is doing and record lectures and each expiriment and put them into a weekly module. Students do not deserve to put up with something overly complicated.

Even if we get some video instruction instead of live zoom sessions, it is better than getting a paragraph on what to do without ANY instruction and trying to decipher between the student body what that paragraph meant.

It is not fair that when we need help our lab instructors will tell us they will not spoon feed us!

I have had two bad experiences with the physics department already. The first offense I tried to email my lab TA, Howard, and ask if I could be switched to an online lab because I live with someone who is autoimmune. Therefore, I do not feel comfortable coming to campus. He then directed me to the physics department and I spoke to a woman who basically told me it was impossible to take the lab online. The second offense, I tried asking my lab TA Howard for guidance on the motion/free fall lab by sending him a picture of my work and he responded with "I have no idea what you're talking about, my neck hurts reading this". I then assumed I would be teaching myself the course from then on out. Not only is the physics department unprofessional but unwillingly to help their students during a PANDEMIC. This does not just reflect poorly on the physics department but UNLV as a unit.
