To whomever it may concern: We, the undersigned, would like to bring an issue to the consideration of the governing IHSFA body. We would like to preface our case with the following observations: 1. We understand that judging limitations as well as time limitations may make the following impossible, and 2. We recognize the extreme amount of work that goes into the State Debate tournament and urge anyone who may consider this petition to recognize that this is not a set of demands or orders, but simply a very polite request. We believe that it would be to the benefit of all debaters at the State Tournament to the most accurate record reflective of a team's performance. We don't believe that this can be achieved through a three round, six ballot system. Debaters that have one bad round or one bad draw will be placed at an extreme disadvantage. It is in the best interests of all debaters to have a fair system that allows the true top sixteen teams to break to octofinals. Thus, we propose the following system: five or six preliminary rounds, with high/high powermatching starting in the third round. If there are an odd number of teams, byes for the first two rounds will be randomly drawn. Byes for the powermatched rounds shall go to low teams. This system is possible from a logistical standpoint. Two, and possibly three rounds can be held the night before. We also would like to note the possibility of extending the tournament to Sunday morning, if necessary. We believe that ensuring a fair tournament outweighs the logistical problem with conducting additional preeliminatory rounds. ((NOTE TO THE UNDERSIGNED: Please include your name, school, and event))
