We, the undersigned parents and members of the Ignacio community, are calling for urgent action regarding the conduct of Breana Talamante-Benavidez and the broader lack of accountability in Ignacio School District leadership.

Why We Are Petitioning
• On September 11th 2025, during class, a student expressed sadness that Charlie Kirk had been killed. Instead of showing compassion, Ms. Talamante-Benavidez laughed and said, “Maybe he shouldn’t have been doing that.”
• Mocking a child’s grief is unacceptable for any educator, regardless of personal or political views.
• This is not an isolated incident. Parents have previously reported bullying and unprofessional behavior by this teacher, and those concerns were minimized or excused.
• If prior complaints were not properly documented, that is a leadership failure. Those past offenses must still be taken into account when determining consequences.

• Protecting the school’s image instead of protecting children has damaged trust.
• Every time leadership looks the other way, it sends the message that mistreatment of students is acceptable.
• What weakens Ignacio’s reputation is not parents speaking up — it is inaction and excuses.
• It’s time to change the narrative: stand up for our kids, hold staff accountable, and show real leadership through meaningful action.

1. A formal investigation into this classroom incident and all prior complaints.
2. Documentation and transparency of outcomes and consequences.
3. A clear standard of professionalism and accountability for all staff.
4. Consideration of both current and past behavior — even if it was never properly documented — when determining consequences.
5. An emergency school board meeting immediately to address this matter. This cannot wait until the next scheduled meeting.

School district is traumatizing for all children. K-12. My daughter attended Ignacio Elementary for a brief time in August 2024 for kindergarten. She experienced extreme bullying, and I removed her immediately because Ignacio school district did nothing about it.
There has never been accountability in the Ignacio school district. Starting at the top, from the superintendent to the teachers!! It has always been all based on cliques, who knows who and who you’re related to.
Her actions are not fit for the 6 pillars the school pushes the students to follow. If you expect them to follow those pillars than so too do the teachers need to follow them. Teachers are to teach critical thinking and facts. Not bully and emotionally stunt the students.
My children don’t go to the school with this teacher, but do attend school in Ignacio, and I am appalled that any child in this small town should have their feelings belittled by a teacher.
As a former educator myself, I am beyond disgusted by Ms. Benavidez choice to mock a student instead of supporting a youth that was sharing their grief.
We need to stand up for our children, grand children!
These educators need to stick to the subject matter that they’re paid to teach.

Benevediaz is not a teacher I want around my grandchildren, she should have shown compassion for her student(s) and condemned political violence? If there have been so many complaints about her in her position, why is she still there? Stop pushing behavior under the rug and hold her accountable ! She does not emulate a positive learning environment for those kids!
