Final supporters
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the governing body for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standard has announced it is encouraging the use of more responsibly sourced building materials, and will now begin providing credit to wood from American Tree Farm System (ATFS) certified forests.
This is a milestone victory for family forest owners, Tree Farmers, and the forestry community. This change will allow a significantly larger portion of sustainable wood products to qualify for the LEED standard, allowing more wood to be used in green buildings thus stimulating the markets for sustainable wood from family woodland owners.

THANK YOU for supporting sustainable forestry, through expanding LEED standards to include forests that are certified by the American Tree Farm System (ATFS). This helps to ensure that family forests are kept in active forestry and also decreases the likelihood of families being forced to sell their land to developers. With wood prices dropping over the past 10+ years, we need to ensure markets for sustainably grown wood are solid and durable, or else families will be forced to sell their land to developers to pay taxes, expenses, and other costs of land ownership. Family forest owners certified under the American Tree Farm System manage their land to the highest standards of forestry, wildlife habitat preservation, and other ecosystem services. LEED qualification ratifies the important work they do and will provide an important market to enable them to keep performing. I look forward to this pilot program becoming permanent soon.

It is great that LEED is finally recognizing American grown certified wood from American Tree Farm System. Most American certified wood comes from ATFS and SFI. Would is a great green building material. Tree Farm certification makes sure it is grown sustainably in ways that protect and improve water, soils and wildlife resources.
