Ever heard of free speech? This is disgusting

Sacred Heart, this is disappointing. Why isolate, shame, and ostracize the girls you supposedly value in their wise freedom? It makes the entire society seem so stifling, repressive, and hypocritical; certainly not a place where I would want my future daughters to go. Why even bother telling your students that they can have a voice and enact positive change for causes they believe in if you strip it away the moment it doesn't agree with your values?

Stone Ridge Class of 1964 and I say SHAME on you, Greenwich ! Nothing of the Sacred Heart tradition is honored in your action. Please explain to all of us how you can claim any understanding of the teachings of Jesus. Shaun Murphy

This is absolutely unbelievable! So sad that an educational institution should prohibit freedom of speech AND BUMPER STICKERS. This school must protect those freedoms. Such archaic thinking and horrible treatment of a student.

Planned Parenthood is more than ABORTIONS and it is under siege from the insane Republican Party. You should be proud that one of your students is standing up for PP. I stand with her. BTW I am a 62 year old parent of 3 girls who went to SH on 91st Street in NYC

I would like my granddaughters to understand that they have a choice. Women’s health is huge at Planned Parenthood.

I am so disappointed in CSH Greenwich for this threat to Katie Murray’s presence at the school. I am a graduate of CSH 91st Street and was educated that a woman’s ability to express her viewpoints should be celebrated and create dialogue. Katie’s display of a Planned Parenthood sticker and support of Planned Parenthood is not something to punish. It is something that should encourage conversation, as that agency does does great work to help young women in need across a wide span of health issues. This is absurd, and I expect more from my network.

This is honestly ridiculous. Though it is a private school, every individual (unless they have signed away that right) has the ability to express themselves because of the first amendment

I'm so disappointed to hear about how this is being handled by the school. While I was there, plenty of students had stickers all over their laptops and staff members never said anything as long as they were in line with their beliefs. This is about so much more than a sticker, it is about a school that on paper promises to “educate women to have independence of judgment, personal freedom, and strength of character so that they can become leaders with broad intellectual and spiritual horizons” but in reality silences and threatens a student who expresses an opinion that may differ from some staff members or the administration. Banning students from expressing their support of political organizations or their stance on social issues does not sound like the policy of a school that seeks to educate future leaders with broad intellectual horizons. Sacred Heart, I thought you were better than this. Heather Grehan Class of 2010

The school's actions are 100% a violation of the Supreme Court decisions of Tinker v. De Moines and Bethel v. Fraser as well as the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment. CSH is privately funded, so they are not a federal institution. You are right - student freedom of speech is currently protected in schools only if it is taken away by a government institution. BUT this is a very thinly lined legal technicality - one that directly violates the integrity and fine print of the United States Constitution. If this were to go to court, I have no doubt that this case would take national press and major changes to Educational Law & Policy could be made to protect the Constitutional rights of students in privately funded education institutions. In my mind, this is way bigger than Kate Murray.

There's no way expulsion is the solution/an appropriate threat. Sacred Heart schools are better than this.

I don’t stand with Kate because the whole arguement of you “educated” CSH girls is that her freedom of speech was taken away but freedom of speech is only protected if the govt takes it away. Everybody knows abortion is wrong and although many still believe planned parenthood doesn’t specialize in abortion the reality is it does, planned parenthood which is being supported here helps fund people to kill their babies and strip the lives from innocent human beings. Clearly Murray is not being expelled because of showcasing her political beliefs but something that she did to offend or insult the administration in their reaction to the sticker. For those saying they will not donate to CSH you better because the girls there don’t even know their own rights as Americans and students and if they believe it is unfair they should leave the school or have a polite well informed conversation to create change not complain.
