The recently opened 404 extension has (a) created unacceptable noise levels which erode the quality of life for the residents in our community, (b) vastly decreased the enjoyment level of using the Sharon Hills Park, and (c) created a safety issue for our children using the park due to inadequate fencing. Projected increases in vehicular traffic over time will exacerbate the issues. Immediate action is necessary to rectify the problem. It is not difficult to imagine the magnitude of legal issues should adventurous children decide to climb the fence and suffer harm.

We, the residents of Sharon Hills and surrounding neighbourhoods in the Township of East Gwillimbury and Towns of Newmarket and Bradford, and concerned citizens of York Region and beyond, hereby demand that a physical barrier, which provides both sound dampening and safety for our children, and an earth berm, be constructed on the west side of the highway 404 extension from Green Lane in the south, to Mount Albert Roadin the north. In addition, mature trees that were removed from Sharon Hills Park should be replaced by equally mature trees upon completion of the barrier and berm to restore the natural setting of the community. Thank you for your support.

The Regional Council thinks they can ignore the constant roar of truck traffic and the safety risks we are facing every single day. I have been relentless in calling the planning office to demand they look at the dangerous gaps in our fencing. They are dragging their feet but we are not going anywhere until these barriers are built.

Living right by Sharon Hills Park used to be so peaceful. Now it sounds like im living in a construction zone 24/7. FIX IT.

The noise is absolutely brutal lately. My kids cant even play in the backyard anymore without hearing that constant roar from the highway. We need those berms put in before someone gets hurt near that fence.

We actually live North of Mount Albert and the noise pollution is just as bad in our neighbourhood. I would submit that the immediate requirement for physical barriers and a berm must be extended to include the northern edge of the current residential development in Sharon proper.

The construction of Highway 404 with a course concrete base as opposed to asphalt has resulted in a considerable increase in noise heard by residents of EG in close proximity to the highway - if I'm elected as a new member of council, you have my pledge that I will work with the communities affected to find ways of reducing the noise and improve the quality of life residents are entitled to - I will follow through with the existing council's promise, to keep the pressure on the MTO to introduce solutions to reduce noise, and I also acknowledge that the Town of EG has a direct responsibility as well - the Town must introduce it's own buffering……….trees, earthworks, and other reasonable measures to reduce noise concerns of local residents - I will relentlessly follow through with both the MTO and Town to provide solutions acceptable to residents - I 'm also disappointed with the lack of maintenance of our large town parks - previous councils spent a great deal of time and $$, from both Developers contributions and property taxes, to build beautiful parks like Sharon Hills Park, Anchor Park, Harvest Hills Park and others - each spring I drive by many of our parks and they resemble weed patches - it's time we properly maintained our special parks with more front line maintenance staff rather than $100,000+ managers at the Civic Centre - just a few of my thoughts on the subject - JACK HAUSEMAN

Ontario smart growth network raised the inadequate noise study for the 404 back in 2007. The town and the province and our MPP were unwilling to engage in any real oversight because residents were demanding the highway. None of the above supported our request for a better noise study at that time. There were inadequate noise and pollution studies for human health. It is too late to address these issues properly once the highway is there. Noise is well documented to cause serious stress, and air pollution from highways causes serious health issues. I am shocked at the feigned support the Town and MTO are now giving to residents. They could not have cared less in 2007 and did not support OSGNs request at that time for better noise studies. http://www.yorkregion.com/opinion-story/1436671-hwy-404-environmental-concerns-still-not-addressed/
