Petition Summary:

We, the undersigned commuters, residents, and taxpayers, demand accountability and immediate action from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the contractor, Zack Burkett Co., for damages caused by unsafe road conditions on Highway 287 between Wichita Falls and Iowa Park, Texas.

What Happened:

In recent weeks, Zack Burkett Co., under contract with TxDOT, began resurfacing a section of Highway 287. The company scraped off the existing pavement but failed to immediately repave or properly remove loose debris. As a result:

  • The road has remained in an unsafe, stripped-down condition for weeks.
  • Loose gravel and debris have been left unchecked.
  • Numerous vehicles have suffered cracked or shattered windshields and other damage due to flying debris.
  • The situation is worsening daily due to high-speed traffic dislodging more debris.

Our Demands:

  1. Immediate cleanup and stabilization of the affected roadway.
  2. A formal public acknowledgment by TxDOT and Zack Burkett Co. of the hazard and damages caused.
  3. A dedicated and expedited claims process to reimburse drivers for windshield and other vehicle damage.
  4. Preventive measures and improved debris management for future projects.

Why It Matters:

This is not just an inconvenience — it’s a public safety hazard and a financial burden on hardworking Texans. Commuters should not have to bear the cost of repairs caused by negligence during a state-funded road project.

We are asking TxDOT and Zack Burkett Co. to do what’s right: clean up the road, fix the hazard, and take responsibility for the damage already done.

I no longer take 287 north or south. My windshield was sprayed with gravel when a semi truck zoomed past me on my way to work. It left multiple little chips in my windshield. I cannot afford to replace it right now. And I can’t afford for my insurance premium to go up.

We received damage to our truck windshield on this stretch of highway on 287 on 2 separate occasions. Insurance paid for chip repair, but the chips were not able to be repaired. We are now out of pocket a $500 deductible to get the windshield repaired.

June 18th at 8:42pm my windshield was cracked by flying debris from Highway 287 Northbound. I called TXDOT but I was unable to reach anyone. I tried to avoid the debris, but there was no way possible. My vehicle is 3 months old. 2025 Yukon Denali.

I sustained multiple chips on my windshield due to both lanes being open no way to travel safely evening, driving safe distance from car and front due to the other lane being open hurling gravel onto to cars! It was so bad and unsafe I call 911 to ask for an office to please come drive it !

Had damage to work vehicles in my yard. And a POV due to negligence and unsafe road conditions caused my TxDOT and Zac Burkett construction. They left asphalt junks and road debris all over 287 between Iowa park tx and Wichita Falls tx.
