We support making HHS a place for everybody. Just one instance of racism is enough to make people feel unsafe. The safe and welcoming environment that we all want to work towards is ruined, and we become incapable of cooperating. Getting along and working together is simply more important than the things that make us different. As students, we need to protect our cooperative ability. It is not difficult to help achieve this goal.

Our high school is one of the most diverse schools in Henderson County. We all come from different backgrounds. We know that our diversity is something special about our school and that we are better because of it. It is important at HHS that we can accept each other and allow others to enjoy being at school. If you go to Hendersonville high school, you belong here. The purpose of this petition is to recognize issues within our school and commit to actively work to make others feel welcome at our school. It must be made very clear that Hendersonville is a place of tolerance. The school faculty will not do this. We are the only ones who get to decide the culture at HHS. We will make it whatever we want it to be.

Updates

March 30, 2021

I have been reading the stories you are sharing about your experiences in the hallways and classrooms. It is clear that the culture we deserve is not what we are getting right now. We are currently organizing a group to bring these specific concerns directly to the administration.

March 30, 2021

Seeing this momentum shows that so many of you truly care about the culture at our school. Your commitment proves that we are ready to take ownership of our environment and demand the respect we deserve.

The students of HHS deserve an update on this. Remarks like hers create a hostile learning environment for her peers and she should be punished with full transparency from admin.

Racism has been in this school for the longest, It’s a shame it had to come out like this. I’m glad something is being done about it.

I am very proud of the students of my alma mater taking a stand against a disgusting opinion. Work to change peoples perceptions and stand for each other.

I think confining the teaching of black history to one month and at most 3 ppl is hurting student and keeping them from understanding the oppression and culture of minorities
