We the students of Ms. Kristina Hering's class believe that Ms. Hering should answer questions on her chemistry tests.

Ms. Hering's Reasoning:

  • They do not answer questions for you on the AP exam.
  • You need to be able to interpret questions without asking questions on the AP exam, and I'm giving you this skill.

Our counterarguments:

  • Honors Chemistry and Chemistry are not AP courses and do not need to prepare us for an AP exam.
  • AP exam questions are reviewed for clarity by professionals, but mistakes and vagueness have been known to be present on the Honors Chemistry and Chemistry tests.
  • In Honors Chemistry, the goal is to understand the concept. However, if one does not understand a question but understands the concept, the goal changes to being able to interpret a possibly obscurely-worded question.
  • Many students can testify to the effect that, if a question is worded in a way that unreasonably challenges a student to interpret it, therefore removing testing the concept, the teacher will answer questions instead of turning them or telling them that they are overthinking the problem.
  • Bright students in Ms. Hering's class have been known to misinterpret questions, not due to the fact that they wouldn't have known the answer if the question was worded in a clear way, but that the obscurity or bad wording of the question was what caused them to lose the point.
  • Additionally, the students can testify to the effect that, by asking questions, we are not just trying extract any answers but have the question told in a better, less obscure way with better wording.
