Do you remember when the government of the day in BC lowered the recycling fee on cans and bottles On a can of pop it went from .10c to .5c. for example. At the time I remember thinking it was a bad idea as overnight it lowered the amount of money bottle collectors could make by half. There was no consultation and no uproar when it happened as the poor in our society have no voice, and the bill passed with virtually no fan fare. Can you imagine if your salary went down 50% overnight with no consultation Bottle collectors are the lowest level of the employment ladder but they have their pride and with a strong work ethic they create opportunities for themselves with a byproduct of helping the environment, a truly noble cause. The recycling fee puts money in their pockets and helps the environment by having people reuse and recycle our societies cast offs. It would seem like the perfect way for the average citizen to donate to the poor. There is no downside to raising the rate as anyone who wants to return their empties would get their money back. It would only effect people that discard their empties without a thought of recycling. It's my hope we can have this decision rescinded and increase the deposit on cans to .10c as well as increasing the other recycling charges on bigger containers.
