Allowing more electronic signs was NOT in the interest of the public, but in the interest of outdoor advertising companies. It was also NOT in the interest of attracting tourists who come to New Mexico because of the dark skies which the electronic signs degrade.

I went to NM as tourist to see observatories and dark skies in the desert. If this is approved, it will be a loss of income and jobs for the state from research and astro tourism. Transportation Commission needs to be investigated for improprieties related to billboards. yes, we're all in this together. billboard industry is mobilized on a national and sometimes global level. Those who care to defend the right for starlight and to live without the blight and harm from light pollution, most become organized & mobilized on a national & global level too.

Digital billboards are killers. They distract drivers and destroy the nocturnal environment. They should be banned.

Did you know that Minnesota was forced to pay $4.321MILLION to remove one single digital sign from a Minnesota highway because they needed to put in a new bridge. Clearchannel simply put this same billboard up in another location 3 weeks later. Every DOT ought to heed this lesson-- the billboard industry thrives on lawsuits. NM DOT, do everything you can to get out of the grip of these alligators.New Mexico's trademarks are hot air ballooning championships and starry night skies. Cherish the starry nights, for they are disappearing around the world. The National Park Service studies predict by 2025, 90% of people in America will never see a starry night sky even once in their entire lifetime because of exponential light pollution. • Are you aware that the American Medical Association and World Health Organization issued warnings that light pollution is harmful to human health and safety. • Are you aware that light pollution is documented by extensive peer-reviewed research to cause harm to the environment, ecosystem, literally changes the chemical composition of the air we breathe? • Are you aware that light pollution is documented by extensive peer-reviewed research to significantly increase the human risk to breast and prostate cancer; type 2 diabetes and obesity; mental, sleep, memory and mood disorders, including depression? • Are you aware that light pollution is listed as a probable carcinogen (same level as cigarette smoking and arsenic) because artificial light-at-night causes circadian disruption and literally turns OFF the human body's signal to produce essential cancer-fighting melatonin. Once we sell out our night sky, it's gone forever! It's ironic that in selling out this most precious increasing rare and precious resource to ad pitchmen, we get absolutely NOTHING for it!

Though not a resident we spend considerable time there each year and do enjoy the pristine skies especially in Angel Fire.
