Liam has been in residential school in an out of city placement for 7 years. The Local Authority at that time sent him out of city as no provision was in place to handle his complex autism and obsessive compulsive disorder.
Whilst at specialist school in this area, he has done well and enjoyed hobbies and activities there along with friendships. He wishes to remain in the same environment to enable him to continue with his progress and happiness.
Because he is 18 and considered “adult” the authorities deem he lacks capacity to make a decision and that we are not making a “best interest” decision on his behalf and are forcing Liam and us to put him somewhere he does not wish to go - a supported living service back in our area, with 3 other autistic adults one of whom he knows from before and is not compatible to live with. He can self harm if another person just slaps him on the back.  If he lived with just one who is unpredictable and makes loud noises or can suddenly touch him this would cause regression.
Because we will not agree to move him there, The authorities are taking this to the Court of Protection to enforce this action against protests from his family/friends and professionals and those who know him best.
“Supported Living” is supposed to take the views and choices of the person with the disability, not find a vacancy and try to “make it fit”. You could not do this to someone without disability – so why can they do it to someone who has a disability?
We are now having to look at moving to the area Liam wishes to stay to allow him to enjoy his happiness and life he wishes to continue, therefore giving him a better quality of life. Liam should be allowed to choose where he lives, who he lives with and the life he wishes to lead.

No caring parents and family should have to face this trauma which has been on-going for over a year and a half. It is a disgrace we live in a country that allows Laws for this to happen. It has made our lives hell and all we are doing is what is right and what is in our son's best interest - mostly - what he is saying he wants to do. No one is listening to Liam.

Liam is stating he does not wish to live where they are wanting him to move to.
The cost is the same for Liam to remain in the same area he has been for over 7 years, progressed well and enjoy his network of friends, staff, activities and hobbies. We have many letters of support from Friends, Family and Professionals - his previous and current physchiatrists and doctors. All know Liam well.
We need to get this right for our son and right for all those with Autism who are stating a CHOICE but are not being heard.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.
