Firefighter Sec. 4. (a) An individual who is
serving as a volunteer
firefighter for a volunteer fire department or a fire department that
provides fire protection services to a unit:
(1) under a contract, excluding
a mutual aid agreement; or
(2) as the unit's fire
department;
may not assume or hold an elected office of a unit that receives fire protection
services from the department in which the volunteer firefighter serves.
(b) An individual who:
(1) is an employee of a unit,
serving as a full-time, paid firefighter; or
(2) serves as a volunteer
firefighter;
in a department that provides fire protection services to more than one (1)
unit, excluding fire protection services provided under mutual aid agreements, may not assume or hold an
elected office of any unit that receives fire protection services from the
department.

I truly never imagined that one hundred people would care about this issue as much as I do. Seeing this many names on the page is entirely overwhelming because this movement belongs to all of you who stepped up to sign.

In some communities, unfortunately, the same pool of talent that serves politically would also be an asset to the volunteer fire service. Sometimes that pool is so small that you may have to do without one or the other.
It is sad that these individuals who are often the most in tune to the needs of their community are excluded from such positions as represented in this code.
I plan on running next year. As a volunteer, I do not feel that is fair to limit me of my right to be a community leader and be a civil servant as well. Many benefits come from people who work within the town and also run the town. This needs to be resolved or amended to coexist for ALL firefighters. Thank You
With volunteerism on a downward trend, this just can't happen. Small communities need every volunteer
I have served my VFD for 24 years and my town for 21 years. I am exactly the person impacted by this new law.

I believe that in small rural areas that this should not be impacting. we have such low numbers in members ando in a town with only 100 people this really sucks.
