When Canada's Liberal government asked various heads of government agencies to step down, Canada Post President and CEO Deepak Chopra, awarded a new five year $500,000/yr contract by the Harper government just before the election and still with time on his previous contract, quite rightly said No Thanks, in a letter written by the Chair of the Canada Post Board of Directors and presumably sent by Purolator or FedEx. Knowing his job is important to him, we propose the following:

  • Deepak Chopra be reassigned to an Ottawa depot as a letter carrier. With Canada Post's new contract demands insisting that employees can be transferred pretty much anywhere, this should be easy.
  • Deepak Chopra can continue to draw his $500,000/yr salary as a letter carrier, and his fellow posties will promise that they won't harbour any animosity to him for this wage gap.
  • However, Deepak Chopra will have to start unassigned until a position opens that he can successfully bid on. Based on slightly over 5 years' seniority, it is probable that at best he will get on as sick relief.
  • As a relief carrier, it's unlikely he will be able to finish many routes within the designated 8 hours. Any overtime accrued will only entitle Deepak Chopra to actual letter carrier pay (at time and a half), commensurate with his seniority.
  • If Deepak Chopra is injured on the job by, for instance, slipping on ice while trying to handle the two bundle system, he will be entitled to WCB at actual letter carrier rates. Like every other Canada Post employee, however, he will have to wait for possibly as long as two months for his claim to kick in. To tide him over he will be able to use all 7 of his annual personal days (which will be returned to him unless his claim is denied) and then his short term disability at 70% of normal letter carrier salary. He can top that up to 100% if he has leftover sick time, but considering his seniority date that is unlikely.
  • However, if Deepak Chopra just gets too sore and tired from carrying mail, packets, and admail in an overloaded satchel for up to 200 houses at a time, up to a distance of, say, 15-20 kilometers every day, then he only has whatever is left of those 7 personal days to use, after which he moves to short term disability.
  • If Canada Post locks out its employees, Deepak Chopra will be entitled to strike pay provided he puts in 20 hours per week on the picket line.

We are sure Deepak Chopra would enjoy his time on the front lines of Canada Post, where the important, real and truly rewarding labour is done. As a bonus, the government of Canada would be able to select a new President and CEO of Canada Post, one hopefully untainted by claims of partisanship.

Seeing 500 people take this idea seriously is honestly startling to me. This whole thing really belongs to the folks who actually walk these routes every single day.

Seeing the list of names grow like this feels completely surreal to me. If we can reach five hundred signatures by the time the next shift starts it would be a huge moment for all of us who want to see this happen.

The only way for a boss any boss to truly know how hard the most organizationally under appreciated and under paid employees work is for them to actually attempt to do the job of those whose wages and benefits he wants to roll back

My girlfriend is a carrier and works on the front lines. I, personally would love to see Mr Chopra put up with the day to day struggles she faces. She along with a lot of her coworkers have many ideas that would benifit both canada post's anual profit as well as the carriers. Let their voices be heard and something get done!

Let him try my route. I only put in 24,970 steps on a average day. Now I have a back injury from a slip and fall from the icy streets this past winter. I'll lend him my ice bug boots.

Maybe an RSMC pay is what he should get, at that is on average 28% lower. One day for those 11 sets of flyers, use his own vehicle, better yet he should deliver RSMCs Christmas parcels at $1 each!

As the daughter of 2 aging posties deepak you should be ashamed of yourself and you and all the other ceos that have never walked a route in there lives should have to walk a route for a couple months at there pay rate in the dead of winter and the heat of summer

This is the perfect solution. A good leader isn't afraid to get down in the trenches with his groups. Let's see him earn his pay. If he can survive the duration of his contract as a letter carrier, working full time he will have my respect.
