Every year many hedgehogs are killed on our village roads. They’re now on the UK’s red list of endangered mammals and our community can play an important role in protecting them.
Installing official ‘Hedgehogs Crossing’ signs will help raise driver awareness, encouraging them to slow down and take extra care where hedgehogs are most at risk. Other towns and villages have installed these signs and we believe Cowfold should do the same.
WSCC have invited us to apply for a Traffic Regulation Order for these signs and part of the application process includes gathering signatures from the community in support of our proposals. We already have written support from our County Councillor.
Please sign our petition. Together we can make our village safer for hedgehogs and keep these wonderful animals a part of our countryside for future generations.

It’s crucial that WSCC approve the application and take whatever steps are needed to prevent hedgehogs being hurt or killed by traffic passing through the village.
Hedgehogs are on the Red List this means they are vulnerable to extinction. Habitat loss with larger fields, use of chemicals which kill insects and poison hedgehogs in gardens and especially busy roads have all contributed. We need signs to raise awareness and reduce accidents.
Hedgehogs are one of our most loved animals but their numbers have declined dramatically over the years especially because of traffic. These animals are so important to our ecosystems by controlling insects and enriching biodiversity.
We need these to raise awareness to drivers passing through and living in our village that hedgehogs are about. They are an indigenous mammal that is endangered and on the red list since 2020 so we need to do whatever we can to ensure they do not become extinct.
As one of the nearest hedgehog Rescue & Rehabilitation team, l strongly encourage this petition to protect our native Red List hedgehogs
Our busy roads represent one of the biggest threats to our hedgehogs. Signs help to grow awareness.

Too many hogs have been killed on the roads of Cowfold. We are a small village with a massive amount if traffic. Hogs dont know cars kill but drivers do. Please slow down for hedgehogs, let's save them not kill them.
