Imagine a place where people of all ages come, where health ranks supreme and safety is paramount. A facility where residents of Hatteras Island, young and old, can reap the physical and mental benefits of walking, jogging, running, jumping, and throwing. A Track and field complex where elementary students learn the skills to excel in all other sports in addition to learning sportsmanship and goal setting. High school athletes have the opportunity to compete in one of the few sports where an individual and a team can be competitive. This facility would be "Home of the Hurricanes", a connection to our sister schools where student-athletes are equal. A complex that Dare County Schools is proud to call theirs and invite schools from all over North Carolina to come experience the thrill of competition.
As a runner who attended college on an athletic scholarship, our school board & county have been doing a disservice to our children for decades! Good runners can very easily earn scholarships to colleges but without an actual track to practice on to reach their BEST puts them at a distinct disadvantage over other student athletes in our area. Track encompasses boys and girls & offers many options within the sport for kids who might otherwise not play a sport the entire year. Think about how many kids lives might be different if this had been an option for the past 20 yrs! I was told by a teacher & coach when they built the football field a track was coming in the next few yrs.....we see how that worked out! It is BEYOND time our school had one!
