My brother Joshua Stewart is in that high school and I go to Hammond Eastside. I am in 8th grade and will be attending the high school next year. I do not want to be limited to the types of outwear I can ware. I believe the things students ware allow the them to express themselves in their own way and not have to be suffocated by rules that will not better the school itself.

Some parents cant buy their kids hoodies and sweatshirts so why stop the kids from wearing their own jacket the school board said that we can wear any kind of jacket so why are you change the rules

Hammond high literally doesn’t care about their students. Wearing clothes we like is better for our learning because we’re more focused when we are comfortable. If we wanted a strict dress code and to waste our money on stuff we already had that we can’t wear anymore, don’t you think we would have went to a private school.

I’ll be calling the school board because there’s no reason for us not to be able to wear a jacket of our choice. It’s going to be getting cold soon and as long as the jacket doesn’t have foul language on it. It shouldn’t matter. Ain’t no way a student’s going to be looking at my jacket all day. Y’all might as well make us wear purple or white shoes too.

Why does the school want to deprive the students of all their freedoms like listening to music, earrings, beards, and now jackets. This is causing more of a distraction then before when there’s wasn’t a jacket change. They think it’s helping but in reality more kids are going to be thinking about the rule than education.

They need to let us boys wear ear rings because think about it. It’s already hard for us boys because we have to shave but we can’t wear different color jackets that’s crazy. We already wearing uniforms come on no. Let’s be real all the boys want is to wear ear rings and any kind of jacket. We just get did down back because look if we don’t anything us boys always getting in trouble but it’s not our fault. All we just asking if we can wear our ear rings and any jacket come know Hammond high magnet school

Agreed. Parents that were proactive in purchasing outer garments are being told "Throw your $ away, now you cant return what you've purchased because it's already been worn beings we didnt pro-war you and you must utilize additional resources shopping from store to store to find the exact color outer wear that an entire school is also out looking for" This is very inconsiderate to parents that may not have those resources; time , transportation or finances and even if so, unfair that they money already spent is deemed useless. In addition, outer wear is the last thing the High School students had as a way to "be themselves". High school is already a stressful environment for many (statistics show it's when most mental disorders either appear and/or are exacerbated)
I think our focus should be on school threats, cyber attacks, GPA's, behavioral issues, school improvements, Teacher pay increases and a list of other issues that certainly prioritize the specific color of an outer garment. The young adults are already ripped of their freedom of hair color, tops, bottoms, belts and shoes; why take the one last item they had to Express themselves. Furthermore, if a jacket color is causing distractions to any student or staff member; there issue is much deeper than a jacket color change will repair.

I feel like I should be able to express my self in what I wear. I don’t have a problem with the uniform but I want to wear my jackets that I pay for.....not my parent. It’s even worse how previous years how the sports teams would provide jackets, that they won’t let us wear cause they are not solid. We payed for those jackets and we play on teams for hammond high, but we aren’t able to wear it. It’s just not right.

The whole situation is ridiculous honestly. It’s bad enough that we have to wear the same school uniforms at least let us stand out and be different through our jackets. I feel like we are in in jail at this point . The school say no phone nor headphones all because of the cyber attack . They are more focused on what we wear instead of what we are going to learn or trying to get everyone to score high on ACT & LEAP test this school is ridiculous. NEW PRINCIPLE US PLEASE !! I Know my rights so if I have to protest I will lets talk about how they are messing up everyone’s schedule’s .. & how they won’t let me double up although I’m a junior & I want to graduate early even if I’ve met the criteria... they would wait until every Hammond high students paid for 30$ jackets and up to announce that its only navy , white , & purple jackets only . The school is a get over they only want to make money off the students they sale 5$ sweaters because they know they are going to make money off students .
