I am teaming with CHI Haiti and the Institute for International Business at the University of Iowa, under the mentorship of Dimy Doresca, to propose a three credit hour International Entrepreneurship class with a study abroad component to Haiti. This class would follow a similar structure to the other International Entrepreneurship and Culture courses (Example:https://isis.uiowa.edu/isis2/courses/details.page?...).
My proposal will include in-depth research on the business culture and issues in Haiti through direct communication with Haitians, with members of CHI Haiti, and independent research, in order to make recommendations for the course structure. Additionally, my proposal will justify the need for this program, what students' will gain from the class, and how any security and health infrastructure concerns will be mitigated.
Lastly, I will gauge the interest of students to participate in this social entrepreneurship trip to Haiti. For that reason I have created a petition to gain support for the program idea. If you think this is a good idea, please add your name!

I am honestly overwhelmed by the number of people who believe in the potential of this Haiti program. This momentum belongs entirely to you because your interest is exactly what shows the university that this idea matters.

The students I have known who have had the opportunity to travel to Haiti, whether for education or service, have returned with changed perspectives and a commitment to this special place. I think that Iowa students should have this opportunity as well.
I know a bit about Haiti and I believe this country needs close study and analysis. There is extreme poverty and political corruption is a way of life. I learned quite a bit about Haiti when I was engaged in the relief efforts after the earthquake in 2010. We were able to gather and prepare for shipment medical first aid materials and food which would withstand the transit and tropical environment. I was also awarded a "President's Volunteerism" Award in 2010 as the result of our efforts and ability to get the materials on to the island in an expedited gashion.

This sounds like an incredible opportunity for students to actually see how things work on the ground. Real world experience like this is so much better than just sitting in a classroom all semester.
