I dont have any memories of hiking the trail yet. I was always waiting for my chance to hike the trail, but since it has been closed I have tried to be respectful to the people in the area and wait for it to be open legal and safely. Now because of typical politics I probably will not have the chance.
Do the right thing open it up to the public on a restricted basis...Requiring a paid admission of 5 or 10 dollars for fixing and upkeep is better than spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to dismantle it and never have a way to recoup it.

These stairs were renovated with public funds for the purpose of public access. It's a travesty that access has been stalled for more than 10 years.

I lived in Hawaii for 3 years and was grateful for my experiences there; this hike tops the list as the most beautiful vistas. It would be a tragedy to be not made available to future generations who are already predestined to miss out on so much of nature's beauty.

Isn't the idea a making a piece of land restricted kind of insane? Imagine a world where there are no open beaches and no open hikes, all are either monetized or restricted. That's where we're headed when we start restricting hikes. What is the beauty of Hawaii? Why do so many people visit? The outdoors! Nature! Even if you never plan on hiking this the idea of it being illegal is absurd. What if I wanted to shut down your favorite beach because my house is nearby? Would you feel the same?

Not all trails need a parking lot and easy access; people will find their way for the sights and experience. They are already doing that now. Open it and let them safely.
