There are many ways to allow this ecotourist attraction to be upkept! Keep the stairs open for the people!

I hiked the stairs about 30 years ago, and now live on Oahu and want to hike it again. Please open the stairs. If it becomes a "fee" attraction, so be it. Open the stairs to the public as intended. Mahalo.

A treasure, belongs to all... make it work and reopen the stairs... not simple, not easy as any rewarding project - get it done!

This is a part of history and should not be torn down.

They are magnificent and I lament not being able to climb them!

It would be cheaper to reopen and fix then it would be to tear them down. I would love to climb them but do not want to disturb the neighborhood or trespass on private property

I would honestly pay a lot of money to hike these stairs and I'm sure I'm not the only one. I would love to do this LEGALLY one day.

We must reopen the stairs to the public. This is a beautiful hike that I want to be able to complete one day.

Please reopen the stairs so we can all enjoy it. Accessing the stairs do not have to disruptive to the residents if done right. Limit the number of hikers with lottery and fees. Keeping the stairs closed does not keep people from hiking it!

Please keep this beautiful hike open. I would even pay a fee or sign a waiver to climb it. I have not attempted as I don't want to disobey the law, but I check on this frequently to see if there are any changes.

This looks amazing - truly a world class trail - and I hope one day to experience it. Please don't demolish it! It took great engineering effort to build and it opens up Oahu's rugged landscape to be experienced in a special way. If necessary a permit system could be used to manage visitor numbers, help pay for trail maintenance, and ensure safety information is given and waivers received. As far as danger goes, I think a legal trail would be less dangerous than the current illegal twilight hiking, and there are many people such as the Friends of Haiku Stairs willing to help maintain the trail. There's always some danger associated with hiking in mountainous terrain but people willingly take that danger every day around the world, and come out with smiles on their faces. Statistically it is less dangerous than, say, driving a motor car, but it is so much more fulfilling. We need such places.
