Is this also due to the fact there may be a chance for ukip representatives who share similar views to yourself to get on board with Guiseley town council if it was to be formed?

I am sure those involved would want to be seen doing the right thing for the community but is a rise in precepts the correct thing for Guiseley? Would a town council make the difference or would certain individuals gain power that they do not have via LCC? It's notable that this seems to be pushed by the local labour party when the local ward is represented by three conservative candidates at the city level. Is this based on what you see happening or facts Paul? Been trying to find some information on this for a while, the stats would have us believe that it is steady or falling. This coupled with an increase in population would suggest things are better.

Councillors in a town council must reside in the area. But mainly consist of those who can be arsed and afford to run, there are limits on the amount of money they can spend campaigning but the group pushing this seem to consist of labour party members. Although they do not get a salary they can claim allowances and expenses.

Very good point this is one I have also raised, I'm currently investigating the people who have signed this petition as I believe it is been done in the interest of the local labour party. I would like to question the motives behind gaining a town council in the Guiseley area, people are quoted as saying this will give the local residents the opportunity to be involved in their own communities but there are already many opportunities and ways for residents who wish to have a say and be involved in the community to do so. The reason I am interested in motives is that the hand delivered flyer I received despite requesting no junk mail directed me to ex labour mep David Bowe and stated clearly that town councillors do not get paid. Although this is true town councillors are allowed to claim certain allowances and expenses and the town council would have a budget that will be collected from precepts. Does anyone know if the precept is a percentage of the council tax we pay now or if that would be an additional cost? I believe the precept for the Otley area one which has around 2/3 the population of Guiseley was over 300'000 2013/2014 with a cost of £69.90 to a band D property. Interestingly I would expect most properties in the area to be above band D meaning the cost will be more for those residents. So my final question is are we prepared to pay more money to let people who may or may not claim allowances or expenses (but not a salary!) to discuss matters that we as a community can take to LCC for no extra cost? I am by no ways an expert in this field but something about it all seemed very suspect to me, if anyone involved with the campaign would like to correct me or put my mind at rest that would be greatly appreciated.

Rawdon, Horsforth aand Otley all have town councils and Yeadon is considering whether to have one. The councils give their residents the opportunity to be involved in their own communites and I am sure that Guiseley residents would value a similar opportunity.
