Are you tired of the train horns blaring at all hours of the day and night in downtown Greensboro, making it impossible to sleep, difficult to conduct business and tough to carry on a conversation with eating outside?
Are you worried about yours and others safety at the high volume pedestrian crossing (shown in the attached photo)that leads to some of the great new downtown bars and restaurants.
Then please join us in petitioning Adam Fischer, the Director of Greensboro’s Department of Transportation, to establish a Quite Zone at the train crossing near S. Elm st. and Smothers Place in downtown Greensboro.
A majority of the equipment is already installed. There is already a 4 four way blocking arm train mechanism. We would just need the city to install cameras and sensors to warn trains well in advanced if there are cars or pedestrians stuck on the tracks, a non-passible stick median on either side and a better pedestrian warning system.
This could all be done for less that the cost of a new traffic light. With all that the city and private businesses have had to spend on sound proofing a maintaining properties that are difficult to sell this makes fiscal sense as well.
The city has already investigated this as an option and the ground work has been laid, we just need your support to push it through. Help us make downtown a better place to live, work and have fun!!!

I am back at my desk tonight listening to the piercing sound of the train horn again and it only reminds me why this fight is so necessary. I have been speaking with neighbors who are just as exhausted as I am. We are working on getting a formal meeting with the city officials to show them the volume of people who are ready for this change.

Seeing this progress helps me feel like we might actually get a full night of sleep soon. I spent so many nights lying awake listening to those horns rattle my windows and it means the world to see so many neighbors feeling the exact same frustration.

The railroad crossing has both lights and a crossing arm on each side. There is no way for cars and people not to know a train is coming. The sound is uncomfortable for adults but even worse for babies, children, autistic individuals and any one else who is sound sensitive.
Downtown Greensboro should 100% implement a quiet zone. As a downtown resident, I can tell you it would improve the quality of life many times over, and bring more people downtown. The better downtown does, the better Greensboro will do.
The extended blasts are just unnecessarily long! Also impacts property values of downtown condos. I'm all for safety, but perhaps we can just implement some fairly inexpensive signal technology to be in compliance and not disrupt the nearby residents and businesses.
Can the quiet zone extend towards East Market Street/ Dudley/Benbow? The tracks cross literally feet from dorms and student housing off of NC A&T's campus and as a college student, having a blaring train right outside your window at 2 am is insanely disruptive. I understand this petition is for downtown, but just curious if that can be included since we're not even a full mile away.
My patio business is disturbed frequently by passing trains and their horns. Obviously I understand the necessity of this occurrence but the trains that lay on the horn for 600 yards before and after the intersection seems like over-kill to me. Some trains are fine but others are just too much.
Chill out with the train horns please.
Hey! I hate train noise. Ok ok... So GSO would be nothing without trains, but we all know trains are a symbol of racism, plus they are noisy!!!!!!!!!! So let us call abolish them here and now!

Downtowns around the country have silenced the trains. This is an overdue change that will make Greensboro more inviting, especially to hotel guests..
