DID YOU KNOW - The Railroad that runs thru South Plainfield and Piscataway was built in 1885 when the New Market section of Piscataway was the center of the community, and South Plainfield didn't even exist yet as a town?

DID YOU KNOW - That thanks to the railroad, the town of South Plainfield came to exist and even helped it become an important part of New Jersey's growing economic base. Without it, generations of people wouldn't have been able to succeed in business such as Nischwitz Feed & Fuel, thanks to the railroad.

AND DID YOU KNOW - That in Wisconsin, a state that has more "quiet zones" than any other state in the Union, had 28 of it's 39 railroad-related accidents involve pedestrians? And all because "they didn't hear the train coming".....

The Federal Railroad Administration ("FRA") rules require trains to sound horns at all crossing, regardless of time of day, unless it is designated a "Quiet Zone". A designated Quiet Zone requires installing certain supplemental safety measures ("SSM") at crossings in the zone until a target NSRT safety rating is achieved. And that can cost upwards of $100,000 dollars, just to do a feasibility study! Do YOU want to pay that much more in taxes than you already do?

Please sign this petition to make sure the Mayor of Piscataway and the Mayor of South Plainfield, as well as the respective governing Council Members of The Township of Piscataway New Jersey and The Borough of South Plainfield New Jersey know that establishing QUIET ZONES is a danger to public safety and yet another burden that we the tax payers just CAN'T AFFORD!

There are community groups with petitions out there that want you to think that if there are "Quiet Zones" in these two towns, that all your problems will go away - BUT Do you know that trains STILL will make noise? They travel at 40 MPH and weight thousands of tons! The truck traffic on out local streets make as much noise, create traffic, create pollution, and destroy our streets, which lead to more taxes, among other things. Trains were here before 99% of us lived here,and will be here long after us. Do you enjoy fresh Florida orange juice and access to other items that can be available to make your lives happier? The railroad moves that freight so you can have your food, clothes, cars and other things quicker than if shipped by trucks. Don't be fooled by their rhetoric - They cannot back up their claims with any hard data against the railroad.

Contrary to popular belief, there is not a constant 24 hour use of railroad train horns all day and all night in the Township of Piscataway NJ and the Borough of South Plainfield, NJ. The railroad runs on a schedule to minimize a constant stream of trains.

The Government requires that engineers sound their horns for a minimum of 15 seconds - That is MAGNITUDES shorter and quieter than living next to an airport or highway, which operates constantly, 24/7/365.

The freight trains currently run through the area approximately 20 times a day. Trains require an extremely loud horn for notifying any person in the surrounding area that the locomotive is approaching. However, trains need a lot of space for braking in an emergency. The loud decibels emitted can possibly stop a collision further down the train tracks. The horn notifies the person or obstruction of the impeding train passing, well before the locomotive enters the immediate area. The train may not be able to stop quickly enough for an obstruction close to the train's Trains use the loudest air-horn decibels at 175 decibels.
