Dear Permanent Secretary,
We write to seek an urgent review of your departments Winter Gritting Policy.
We believe the current policy is not fit for purpose, it does not meet the needs of our rural communities and it is putting lives at risk. In particular, we would seek to have all school bus routes included in the Winter Gritting Schedule as of right.
Secondary Gritting, is Second Class Treatment for us as a rural community and for our children. It’s too inconsistent, it means a road can be treated one morning and not the next, it means some areas get salted whist others do not. It is appalling and as local communities we’re demanding action.
At present your department only grits roads which have 1500 vehicle movements a day. This is an unrealistic target for many rural communities. We have a large number of rural schools in this community and many are unreachable for parents on mornings where there has been frost or snow. Better still, many bus drivers are refusing to even attempt some roads because of the lack of salting and understandably so.
No policy should treat rural communities and rural schools as second class citizens, and furthermore this cannot be looked at in pure monetary terms.
We are pleading with you to take action. We want to see ‘All Our School Bus Routes Gritted.’

The silence from the department remains heavy despite the reports I keep sending them about bus drivers refusing these dangerous routes. It is draining to keep pushing against a wall that refuses to acknowledge these risks but I am not walking away from this fight.

It's absolutely disgraceful that our children's lives are being put at risk. Our children are the most precious things in our lives and I can guarantee that if the said minister was paying a visits on my road it would be well gritted in advance for his visit. I also have a special needs child so there's 3 buses travel this road onto another which is also not gritted. It's disgusting
Columbkille Rd, Birches is never gritted. In fact, the only road gritted is main Dungannon to Portadown road starting at Junction 12 roundabout. The school bus route is not on this road at all.
All school children should be treated equally so any road that has a school bus travelling on it should be gritted .Only fair that all children have same access to education
This situation needs to change immediately.
Rural roads need to be gritted to enable buses a safe passage and children's attendance at school
Transport NI has a duty of care to keep or children safe on their way to and from school. Please grit our rural roads.
Safety is a need not an option
