On March 1st 2017, the Calgary Board of education announced the expansion of the science program currently offered at Langevin and Louis Riel. This expansion is very welcomed as demand for the program has grown each year since its inception. The new program is to be housed in the existing schools at Valley View for students in grades K-5 and at Ian Bazalgette for grades 6-7 with grades 8-9 to be offered in subsequent years.

In making this decision the School Board held an online survey for parents regarding their interest in the Science program. Additionally, they looked at the current enrollment numbers at Langevin School from communities in Area III. As demand for the program has grown, students getting into the program from Area III has declined, but interest has not. In order to open the program up and increase the numbers of enrollment the decision was made to open the program up at the aforementioned schools located in Calgary's southeast community of Dover.

While much of the change equals positivity for Calgary students overall, the decision to move children currently attending Langevin who are located in the new boundaries is unwelcome. Children who have attended Langevin for years are being uprooted against their parents wishes, against the choices that parents made for their children. As a result we are circulating this petition in order to bring attention to this upheaval of families, routines, and structures without consideration of the needs of the families involved.

There is a clear understanding of the need for the programs expansion. The ability for more students to have the opportunity to attend a wonderful program is unquestionably a good and necessary change, but not to the detriment of the students and families who have become part of a community at Langevin School. Families who have supported the Langevin School and community of Bridgeland through fundraising, community involvement, time and volunteering. The mural project was worked on by all the students in the school at the time of its construction. They worked on and celebrated its completion as an act of belonging, an act of school and community pride, children go up and down the steps knowing that they are a part of Langevin and Langevin is a part of them. Please sign this petition in hopes of having these families voices heard, and that these children can continue to feel at home in the school that they love.

The feedback from families regarding the proposed boundaries continues to highlight the deep disruption this transition would cause for our children. We are currently organizing these personal accounts to present a comprehensive perspective to the school board trustees. Please continue to monitor this space for news regarding upcoming consultation meetings.

The response to this petition has been profound. It is clear that the stability of our children remains a primary concern for the community. We are grateful for this collective recognition of the challenges families now face.

My grandchildren attend and love this school. It is important for them to remain in an environment that they are comfortable in. That will enable them to learn and grow and isn't that what education should be. It is far more than meeting budgets, convenience or arbitrary borders. Please allow children to stay in the school they love.

My son has been at Langevin since kindergarten. He is currently in grade 6 and deserves to finish junior high in the community that he and his parents have supported for the last 7 years.

It is grossly unfair not to grandfather in the exisiting Langevin students. The families have all made a huge commitment to the school. Partnerships have been formed, with school. The students have friends, strong relationships in the school they are a community. It is to nobody's benefit to move these children.

After fighting for Cameron to attend Langevin as an out of district student in his grade 1 year we were assured he would be a part of Langevin until his grade 9 year. They are taking that away from us. Please review and sign the petition to help us fight for our kids who already are at Langevin to continue their schooling at Langevin.

Everything our family plans is around the school including place to live and daycare/after school program. This decision without a consideration of our situation is a disruption to our lives. Current students should be given a choice. They have created wonderful friedships among each other. We dont want to leave.

I appreciate that the program is expanding. I don't think it's right to move the children who have been with the school since kindergarten. No longer can they walk for field studies. And if I wanted a modified calendar, I would have put my child in a school that has one. Very disappointed.
