I graduated last year from ACHS. I believe every student should have the right to express themselves whether it be through their culture/heritage, activism, or through other interest. ACHS is a very diverse school, yet we have this graduation that is very bland. Each student is unique in their own way. We should highlight each students' uniqueness instead of creating all these rules that make everyone seem ordinary and prosaic. I understand that teachers and staff want this to be a respectable and safe event but it is possible for student to represent themselves in a respectable fashion.
Graduation was not exciting to me. Of course I was happy to graduate, but I felt no personal connection with my graduation ceremony. I have been to many graduations that have the same policies as ACHS and schools that showcase their students' diversity. I have felt a greater connection with other schools' graduations because they were colorful and showed the students' diversity and interest in a beautiful and respectful. It was really disappointing knowing that I spent over 12 years in grade school just to have a very average and monotonous ceremony.
Students should have a say in how they want their ceremony to be. It was them that got themselves through their schooling, so it is only right that they get the ceremony they want and deserve.

People should be allowed to wear what they want especially when graduating as long as it doesn't show inappropriate parts like come on

In a school that supports diversity and encourages students to be themselves, this type of cultural exclusion is an absolute disgrace and is extremely unfair to students of color. Students should be able to express themselves and their culture at graduation openly and freely. Not allowing students to wear completely appropriate things from their own cultures that are in accordance with our dress code perpetrates the idea that students are not allowed to be different and celebrate their culture freely. This idea is extremely toxic, harmful, and disrespectful to students and it should not be tolerated at our school.

I went there last year(2014) and I'm surprised to just now find this out. I understand dress code but to keep students from expressing their culture and who they are. GO CO16 FOR STANDING UP FOR YOURSELVES!!

In a country where we proclaim our freedom, why shouldn't students have the right to wear cultural garments at THEIR graduation. Graduation is a celebration so why can't it be a celebration of everything that helped them through their time in high school. There is nothing wrong with embracing your culture. This needs to happen.

If a CSU or a UC allows their graduates to wear their cultural garmets, the ACHS administration should allow it too. Our end goal is the same; to prepare students for college and life after high school. So, by not allowing students to wear something that honors their culture, you are hindering them rather than encouraging them. And that to me.. Is the complete opposite of what you say the goals are.
Way to go 2016! Way to use your voice in a positive nature!

It's very important that the young people have a voice now! in their Life as they see fit, having the freedom of expression through any possible means, positive messages that they deam fit in remembrance of an event that's happening in their Lives! wonderful idea...
