We, the Grade 3 Parents of Telopea Park School, are strongly against the unexpected decision to move Michael Ellis mid-year to another grade.

Michael is an extremely experienced and exceptional teacher who has had a remarkable effect on his students. The children this decision unnecessarily and negatively affects are distraught. We fully support the rights of teachers returning from maternity leave. However in this case, we struggle to understand the logic of why continuity of teaching should be disrupted in two grades instead of one.

We note that Michael is particularly appreciated for his experience with students with learning disabilities, difficulties and differences. As such, we are concerned about the potential adverse impact of this decision on the most vulnerable in his classes, particularly in regards to the reasonable adjustment requirements as outlined in the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) Education Standards.

We also point out Michael also works extremely well with his colleague Frederique and neither of them support this decision.

In light of this, we ask that the school reconsiders its decision to relocate Michael to another class, taking into account continuity in care and education.

I honestly never imagined this would gain so much traction when I started typing it out in a total panic while the kids were crying about the news. The way everyone understands why keeping Michael exactly where he is matters so much is just overwhelming and honestly it makes me feel like maybe they actually have to listen to us now.

I am surprised that, considering the seriousness and potential consequences of this decision, the parents were not consulted and first heard of this from the mouths of their tearful children. This decision appears to have been made (and for all we know was) entirely on the basis of administrative considerations, with no regard paid to the care or educational needs of the pupils.

My son has really come up and blossomed in this year 3 thanks to Michael. I do not understand why it should be so difficult to keep Michael teaching the same classes for another 5 months then do the swap .

Agree with your comment John. We had always understood that Michael Ellis was to teach this class for the full year. It has been very distressing for Theodore to hear this sudden news and as his parents, we are struggling to understand the logic of this decision.
