Dear Governor Newsom:

Please heed the call of your constituents by allowing the State Water Board to do its job. The San Francisco Bay-Delta is dying, along with the rivers that feed it. Toxic algae blooms are on the rise as fish and wildlife populations decline precipitously. Under your watch, the commercial salmon fishing season was closed last year. California’s aquatic ecosystems are on the brink of collapse and desperately need more life-giving water. You are in the most influential position to provide the necessary relief.

Please drop your support for the misguided Voluntary Agreements and empower the State Water Board to implement the Bay Delta Water Quality Control Plan. We can restore our precious natural resources, but we need you to demonstrate strong environmental leadership that reflects the visionary culture for which California is known.

Thank you for your consideration of our state’s rivers and wetlands.

Surface water is essential to all beings- The Nov/Dec 2023 Bay/Delta Plan hearings demonstrated how the proposed Voluntary Agreements (VA) failed to include ALL stakeholders. The VA's are a 19th century, privilege-oriented solution to a 21st century challenge.

The Rivers, SF Bay, and the Delta are dying so that Corporate Farms can export their product for profit. These waterways need to be restored. I've lived along the bay for 60 years. It's sick. I would much rather have healthy waterways than almonds!

Abandon voluntary agreements. They are too complicated and create perverse incentives for water companies and agricultural districts to pretend to engage in habitat restoration by doing as little as possible. Just leave more unimpeded flow in the river and call it a day.

Seven native fish species are imperiled in the Bay Delta, as is their ecosystem. A 2023 survey found no Delta Smelt (an ecosystem health indicator species) where they were once in great abundance around Sacramento. The fish cannot wait much longer for cool, clean freshwater flows.

Bay Delta Sacramento River flows and water quality are critical for Bay Area in general and San Francisco in particular. Ag can lie fallow drought years. Salmon cannot. Delta heath is critical to California and US West.

From an environmental ethics perspective Volunteer Agreements are an act of environmental injustice undermining conservation efforts for increasing biodiversity and decreasing quality of human life.

Governor Newsom: as a long time watershed volunteer, I have come to the conclusion that only government action can resolve the issues facing our watersheds. We cannot leave those decisions up to entities whose only concern is the bottom line. Please drop your support for voluntary agreements and get a water management plan in place that will support riparian habitat and species instead of the unequal distribution for the sake of profit.

Governor Newsom: The voluntary water agreements haven't worked in the past to recovering our endangered salmon. Please nix the proposed ones which will harm the environment and fish and waste money.
