WE, THE UNDERSIGNED ARE PETITIONING BRITISH COLUMBIA FERRY SERVICES INC. to please support the green vehicle movement here on Vancouver Island and elsewhere in Canada by including Smart Cars under the same half price tariff as currently exists for motorcycle traffic because the Smart Car is the only sub-compact 4-wheeled vehicle that fits within a 3-metre space. Anyone who is a Smart Car owner will have been asked, at least once, "Where's the other half of your car" Smart Car owners, being the eco-friendly people they generally are, will be happy to answer this question, and usually by the time they finish "answering" will have convinced the individual asking that they should also be a Smart Car owner. The problem that Smart Car owners living on Vancouver Island or on the BC Mainland face if they often frequent BC Ferries, is that even though you can easily park TWO Smart Cars in the same 20' space allotted for "regular" length vehicles, and still have some 4.5' left over, rather than charging Smart Car owners 1/2 price, which is the same price as motorcycles, which are often larger than a Smart Car because the motorcycle tariff includes both sidecars AND trailers, Smart Car owners are still being charged for a 20' space. This outdated tariff is also unfair to regular length vehicles as well, because the regular length vehicle parking behind the Smart Car is actually paying AGAIN for the some 11 feet the Smart Car owner already paid for, but doesn't fill up. If you are a regular length vehicle owner, do you think it's fair that you are paying BC Ferries again for some 11 feet of a space already paid for by the Smart Car owner in front of you If you are a Smart Car owner, do you think it's fair that even though you have made a visible effort by choosing to drive a green vehicle that has a much smaller footprint and thus impacts much less negatively on our environment, that your efforts should be ignored by BC Ferries The City of Victoria and other cities in Canada acknowledge the efforts of Smart Car owners by providing 1/2 size, green parking stalls to accommodate vehicles no longer than 3 metres. So far, no other small vehicle (other than some motorcycles w/o a trailer) fits into this very small category. If you think that it's time that BC Ferries got Smart, please sign our petition. It's good for all drivers AND it's a smart move for the environment.
