On the 18th of June the BBC broadcasted unsubstantiated claims about a link between the increase in admissions for Inflammatory Bowel Disease and junk food. This claim was taken from one experts opinion - Dr Sally Mitton, without any peer reviewed literature to back it up. This claim was also broadcast on BBC Radio 1 and has now been published in The Daily Mail, The Telegraph and numerous other news sites with the headline focus being on junk food. These claims are damaging to people with Inflammatory Bowel Disease due to the insinuation that they are at fault for having an incurable lifelong disease. Unless the BBC have peer reviewed evidence to support the link between junk food and Inflammatory Bowel Disease they should apologise and rectify their statement.
