PETITION

to the

City of Mobile

We the undersigned do hereby petition the City of Mobile to honor one of its native sons, Clarence David McCann Jr., an artist and educator who worked tirelessly in our fair city to promote the arts and improve the quality of life in our community. As a teacher at Spring Hill College and the University of South Alabama, David McCann inspired and mentored more than one generation of artists whose creative spirit continues to enrich the cultural life of the region. As a founding member and first President of the Contemporary Artists Consortium of Mobile (CACOM), David brought artists together to provide the support and comradery necessary to flourish. As Curator and Acting Director of the Fine Arts Museum of the South for almost 20 years, David conceived and brought to that venerable institution a number of exhibits of renowned artists, photographers, sculptors, and craftsmen. Working for the City of Mobile, Special Programs Department, he helped conceive and promote a number of new events, such as First Night Mobile, and others.

In order to best honor this exceptional ambassador for the arts, we the undersigned, petition the City of Mobile to issue a proclamation stating that the creative force of nature known as Clarence David McCann Jr., is hereby deserving of a spot in our historic Church Street Graveyard in the area designated for our most beloved artists , writers, and poets for his significant contributions to the artistic life of Mobile.
