In 2015, the City of Winnipeg made a decision to permanently relocate the pleasure skating rink from Gauvin Park in Norwood Flats to Burmac Park in Southdale. The decision was made due to what was perceived as declining usage of the skating rink in previous years.
Despite this, there remains a genuine interest within the neighbourhood to see the return of the skating rink Gauvin Park for 2016/17 season. Matt Allard, City Councillor for St. Boniface, has kindly followed up with this issue and will look into this further.
Gauvin Park is frequently used by young families and plays an important role in building a sense of community. The park provides a meeting place for families to connect and a safe place for children to play outdoors. A skating rink at Gauvin Park would help extend these benefits year round.
A strong showing of support from residents is the best way to persuade the City of Winnipeg to reinstate the Gauvin Park skating rink. Please sign this petition ASAP to show your support for the Gauvin Park skating rink and also indicate if you (or someone whom you are responsible for) would expect to use it this upcoming season.

I spent the morning walking through the park and it just feels so empty without the rink even though the weather is finally cooperating. A few neighbors stopped me to ask about the status with the city office and honestly it is hard to explain why they would move something that brought us all together like that. I am still waiting on a callback from the councillor but I will make sure to post the second I hear anything.

I was just checking my phone and seeing all these names popping up is honestly making me feel like we actually have a shot at getting the rink back. It is funny how quickly this turned from just a random idea I had while walking the dog into something that might actually get on the city council radar if we keep this pace up.

My kids grew up skating at Gauvin. It makes no sense to move it so far away when so many families live right here in Norwood Flats.
KEEP IT LOCAL. My grandkids miss being able to just walk down the street to skate after school.
The city clearly doesn't know how much this park gets used. Put it back where it belongs.
Bring the rink back! It is way too far to drive to Burmac just to skate. This park needs to be for the neighborhood.
We just moved to the area and were really hoping for a local rink. Walking distance is key with small kids.
