Many people who have been in a workplace setting for an extend time are deciding to return to college for additional training. This is to obtain a degree that will help them reach their goals or reach better positions in their existing job. These people are usually called non-traditional students. Non-traditional students have many challenges to face when they return to class; finding the right college for them, scheduling classes around an already busy schedule, balancing work and family and school, or remembering what school is even like.

Georgia Gwinnett College is a great option for non-traditional students, but like most things there is room for improvement. This petition seeks to gain support for additional support for GGC non-traditional students in the following ways:

  • Increase GGC advertising to specifically target non-traditional students. Most non-traditional students seek out GGC, not the other way around. Targeted advertising should increase awareness and lead to increased enrolment of non-traditional students.
  • Create a cadre of advisors that are there to assist the non-traditional students with enrolment, class scheduling and general questions about heading back to school. This would provide the non-traditional student with knowledgeable advisors who can assist in finding courses at the right times and be a focal point for questions about student life and other issues.
  • Create orientation events specifically geared toward non-traditional students. Most non-traditional students aren’t in the same life phases as traditional students and much of the orientation information is not needed for them. However, the issues facing non-traditional students are not generally covered such as what would be good study habits for me?

Please pledge now to help create a better environment for non-traditional students at Georgia Gwinnett College.

Seeing this momentum grow reminds me of the nights I spent sitting at my kitchen table trying to figure out how to balance these classes with my shift work. It is incredible to know that so many others understand the struggle of navigating a degree while trying to maintain a career and a family.

Took me 10 years to finally go back. The advisors had no clue how to help someone who works 9 to 5. Needs to change.

I would love to sponsor a non-traditional students organization. I am also working on developing a GGC 1000 for adult learners. I would like to help in any way that I can. I was an adult learner for all three of my degrees.

Trying to balance a full time job and classes is a nightmare. Anything to help us navigate this would be a life saver.

Adults need help too not just kids fresh out of high school. My boss keeps pushing me to finish my degree but the scheduling is impossible.

I was an non-traditional student and choose Georgia State because they provided what you are proposing. However, as time went on, they left that strategy behind for a more traditional schooling environment. A shame too. I believe that GGC has a HUGE opportunity to capitalize of this demographic that is being neglected now
