The City of Nedlands Council is still deliberating whether to give proposed funds to restore a gorgeous heritage cottage in the Allen Park Bushland area. The cottage currently houses a volunteer group, Friends of Allen Park Bushland Group, which has spent over 20 years restoring and caring for the surrounding bushland on Melon Hill. The project to restore the cottage would also allow other local volunteer groups to use and enjoy the cottage and would preserve the heritage of a very special area which is already home to a number of heritage buildings that are also being preserved and cared for. This petition is to show the council how supportive the community is of using allocated funds to restore the only original cottage in the “Heritage Precinct”, rather than the alternative plan that would destroy the cottage and replace it with a cheaper purpose built shed - a plan that will betray the ethos of the unique heritage area that promotes conservation and restoration.

im still pushing the council to see reason about the cottage because that shed plan just doesnt make any sense for our history. ive been talking to a couple of local reps behind the scenes and they are definitely feeling the pressure from all of you.

im honestly blown away by how much this has grown over the last few days. it feels like the council finally has to pay attention to how much we care about saving our history instead of building a shed. thanks for sticking with me while we push for the cottage restoration.

The “friends” have provided a public service to caring for bushland surrounding Allen Park for many years. Their work has been voluntary and has preserved an area of bushland, most of which has disappeared due to urbanisation.
This cottage is part of the history of Swanbourne and should be preserved. The Council needs to acknowledge the excellent work done by the volunteers by refurbishing their base. If they can do it for the cricket club on Allen Park they can also do it for those who support the Bushland.
This 100 year old cottage has been extensively used by volunteers who have worked tirelessly to restore the Allen Park bushland for the past 20 years. It urgently needs to be reclad & restumped (using funds previously allocated), for use by the community for another 20 years!
The City of Nedlands should surely lead by example and uphold section 5.8 of its own Local Planning Strategy, a stated intention of which is "To protect and promote places of heritage significance through the City".
This is the last original cottage left in its original location in the Allen Park Precinct, the others in the precinct having been imported from other locations in Swanbourne and Subiaco. It is very important to keep for its heritage value as well as its usefulness to the local community.
Restore the cottage in the spirit of conservation. Reduce waste by reusing what you have.
The cottage is an important piece of infrastructure in retaining the bushland, it deserves to be supported for the ongoing benefit of the community

The ‘Friends’ do incredibly valuable work to rehabilitate and maintain the flora and fauna in the bushland which all the community can enjoy and the cottage at Allen Park should be preserved for their use as well as a place to share with other interested groups.
