This petition was created to express the discontent felt for current dress code policies enforced at El Cajon Valley High School in the 2012-2013 school year. This petition is asking for students, alumni, parents, teachers, and even community members to sign the petition and let to students to not only express themselves within an appropriate means but to also be comfortable while in school. We are not asking to let the students wear bikinis to school, we are simply asking to remove some of the stricter and unreasonable rules the school is forcing upon the students. Our main concern is the rule pertaining to tank tops or showing your shoulders. It’s hot in El Cajon and as such many students buy clothing suitable for the weather but due to dress code these students are not allowed to wear clothing that shows ANY part of your shoulder or you will be dress coded. It is understandable that strapless and backless shirts or shirts that show your midriff are not allowed, however, why are tank tops/spaghetti straps not permitted? What is so provocative about our shoulders? If a large amount of cleavage is showing from the top then a dress coding is understandable but just for having your shoulders showing? There are several students whose families are being forced to buy new clothing for their students because much of their clothing is “unacceptable” to wear to school. We are imploring you as a community member of El Cajon to help support the ECVHS student body in its struggle for expression. Thank you for your consideration and time in reading our petition.
